Chapter 2 - THE PHOTOGRAPH IN THE MERCEDES

A low, purring engine hummed through the steady beat of the rain.

I forced my heavy eyelids open. Sitting at the curb, idling silently with its hazard lights blinking, was a sleek, long-wheelbase black Mercedes-Maybach. Its tinted windows were so dark they reflected the gray sky like polished obsidian.

For a second, panic seized my chest. I thought Michael had sent his private security team to drag me off the avenue so I wouldn't embarrass his prestigious family line in public. I pulled Lily tighter against my chest and shrank back against the iron fence of a residential building.

The rear passenger window glided down with a soft, whisper-quiet hiss.

Inside the luxurious, leather-lined interior sat a man.

He looked to be in his late thirties, possessing a sharp, angular jawline, dark hair dusted with silver at the temples, and eyes so deep and piercing they seemed to look straight through the rain and into my very soul. He wore a tailored charcoal-gray suit made of Italian wool, crisp and dry, smelling faintly of cedarwood and expensive tobacco.

He didn't look at me with pity. He looked at me with a cold, intense scrutiny that made the hairs on my arms stand up.

"Ma'am," he said. His voice was a deep, gravelly baritone that commanded immediate respect without needing to raise its tone. "You and your child are going to catch pneumonia out here."

"Please," I rasped, my throat raw from crying. "Leave us alone. I don't have any money."

The man didn't move. He reached into his suit jacket, pulled out a pristine white silk handkerchief, and extended it toward the window.

"I didn't ask for your money," he said calmly. "Get in the car."

"No," I replied, shaking my head as I tried to push myself up against the fence. "I don't know you."

"You don't know me," the man agreed smoothly, his eyes narrowing slightly as he observed Lily's shivering frame. "But you know my brother. Or at least, you thought you did."

I froze. "What?"

The man turned toward the leather seat beside him. He reached down and picked up a high-resolution glossy photograph resting on top of a leather briefcase. He held it up against the open window, right where the streetlamp illuminated the paper through the falling rain.

The second my eyes locked onto the image, every drop of blood in my body turned to liquid nitrogen.

My breath stopped entirely.

The photograph showed a medical laboratory setting. In the foreground sat a clear glass vial containing a blood sample, labeled with a barcoded sticker that read: VANCE, MICHAEL - DNA REF #8820.

Standing directly behind the technician in the photo, smiling smoothly with an arm draped over the lab director’s shoulder, was Michael.

But that wasn't what made my heart stop.

It was the secondary document taped to the glass wall behind them in the photograph—a high-resolution scan of a master paternity report, dated three weeks before my daughter was even born.

At the bottom of that document, clearly printed under official state seal, were two lines of bold text:

PATERNAL BIOLOGICAL MATCH: 99.98% - VANCE, MICHAEL.

STATUS: MATCH CONFIRMED / DEPOSIT SECURED FOR ALTERATION.

My mind reeled. The street, the rain, the noise of the traffic—everything vanished into a roaring white void.

"What... what is that?" I screamed, my voice cracking violently as I lunged forward toward the car window, clutching Lily with one arm while my wet fingers slammed against the leather door frame. "WHAT IS THAT?!"

"That," the man in the suit said softly, his voice devoid of any warmth, "is the original, uncorrupted paternity test conducted by the genetic institute my father built."

He leaned closer to the window, his dark eyes locking onto mine with absolute, terrifying certainty.

"My name is Julian Vance," he said. "Michael is my half-brother. And the man who paid two million dollars to forge the fake DNA test you received today... was Michael himself."
