Chapter 3 - The Discovery

A soft creak from the hallway broke the heavy silence in the room.

Mauricio and Valeria both turned. Standing in the doorway of the small bedroom was Santiago. He was clutching his notebook of drawings tightly against his chest, his sleepy gray eyes blinking against the light of the living room.

"Mommy?" the little boy whispered, rubbing his eyes. "Who is the tall man? Is he the one who bought the microscopes?"

Valeria’s breath hitched. She looked at Mauricio, her eyes pleading with him not to say the word that would change everything.

Mauricio looked at his son. Up close, the resemblance was undeniable—the same stubborn jawline, the same curling dark hair, and those unmistakable, deep gray eyes. The urge to run to him, to hold him and tell him the truth, was almost overwhelming. But he saw the fear in Valeria’s eyes, and he remembered her warning: You still have no idea what you've done.

Mauricio slowly stood up, wiping his face, and forced a warm, gentle smile.

"Hi, Santiago," Mauricio said softly, kneeling down so they were at eye level. "My name is Mauricio. I'm... I'm an old friend of your mother's. And yes, I helped get the microscopes for your school."

Santiago’s eyes lit up, the sleepiness instantly vanishing. He took a step forward, showing Mauricio the cover of his notebook, which featured a carefully colored drawing of a massive, multi-stage rocket.

"Do you like space?" Santiago asked innocently. "I'm going to build a rocket that can go past Mars. But my brother Mateo says we need a bigger yard to launch it."

A tear slipped down Mauricio’s cheek, but he quickly brushed it away, laughing softly. "I think your brother might be right. But you know what? Some of the best rockets are designed in very small rooms. Can I see your drawings?"

For the next ten minutes, the "King of Concrete"—the man who had negotiated with billionaires and heads of state—sat on the floor of a tiny Portales apartment, completely captivated by a four-year-old's drawings of dinosaurs and stars. Valeria watched from the kitchen doorway, her hand pressed against her mouth, her heart waging a war between the anger of the past and the reality of the present.

"Okay, space explorer," Valeria finally said, her voice gentle but firm. "It's time to get back to bed. You have school tomorrow."

"Can Mauricio come to the launch?" Santiago asked, looking at his mother.

Valeria paused, looking at Mauricio's pleading expression.

"We'll see, sweetheart," she said quietly. "Now go back to sleep."

Santiago nodded, waved goodbye to Mauricio, and scurried back into the bedroom.

Mauricio stood up, feeling a profound emptiness as the boy left the room. He turned to Valeria. "I won't let my mother or the company threaten you again, Valeria. I am going to dismantle that NDA. I am going to clear your debts. But I want to earn the right to be here. On your terms. Please."
