Chapter 7 - The Guests Chose Their SideWhen Olivia walked back outside without her veil, the guests understood before anyone announced it.

A soft wave of shock moved through the courtyard.

Then came the questions.

“Is the ceremony delayed?”

“Where’s Daniel?”

“Are those really his children?”

“Did Olivia know?”

The wedding planner tried to redirect people toward the ballroom for refreshments, but gossip was stronger than logistics. Guests gathered in clusters under the white rose arches, pretending to check their phones while openly watching the hotel doors.

Olivia stopped at the top of the steps.

Her father stood beside her.

Daniel came out behind them, face tight, mother gripping his arm like she could physically hold his future together.

I stayed near the entrance with my children.

I had no desire to make a speech. I had already said enough. The truth had done the rest.

But Daniel was not finished embarrassing himself.

“This is a private matter,” he announced, voice loud enough for everyone. “The ceremony is temporarily delayed due to a misunderstanding.”

Olivia turned slowly.

“A misunderstanding?”

Daniel froze.

She walked back toward him, every step controlled.

“You told me your ex-wife was lazy.”

He swallowed.

“You told me she wanted your money.”

A few guests looked at my limousine. Others glanced at the E.C. Atelier emblem on my purse.

“You told me there were no children.”

Daniel’s jaw tightened. “Olivia, stop.”

She raised her voice. “And you invited her here so she could watch me marry you in the dress she designed.”

That was the sentence people would repeat for years.

I saw it land.

Phones came up again. Not all of them, but enough.

Daniel’s face turned furious. “Put your phones away!”

Nobody moved.

Richard Vale stepped forward, and suddenly Daniel looked less like a groom and more like a man standing before a judge.

“My daughter will not be marrying Mr. Hart today,” Richard said.

The crowd erupted.

Patricia gasped. Daniel stepped toward Olivia, but two of Richard’s security men moved in quietly, blocking him without touching him.

“You can’t do this,” Daniel said.

Olivia laughed once, bitter and broken. “I can.”

Then she turned toward the guests.

“I apologize to everyone who came here expecting a wedding,” she said. “I expected one too.”

Her voice cracked on the last word.

For a moment, I felt sorry for her.

Not the polite kind of sorry. The real kind. The kind that comes from knowing what it feels like to stand in public while Daniel Hart’s lies collapse around you.

Mia tugged my hand. “Mommy, is the pretty lady sad?”

“Yes,” I said.

“Because of him?”

“Yes.”

Mia looked at Daniel with the moral clarity only children possess. “Then she should not marry him.”

A woman nearby heard and covered her mouth to hide a smile.

Daniel heard too.

His eyes cut toward Mia, and I stepped slightly in front of her.

That was enough.

Mason moved beside me.

Then Miles.

Three small bodies formed a line against a man who had never earned their loyalty.

Daniel saw it.

And for one second, shame crossed his face.

Then anger swallowed it again.

“You poisoned them against me,” he said.

The courtyard went silent.

I smiled sadly.

“No, Daniel. You just introduced yourself.”

Olivia turned away.

That was when the first guest began clapping.

It was not loud at first. One woman. Then another. Then several more.

Not celebration.

Support.

Olivia covered her mouth, overwhelmed.

I looked at my children and realized something I had not expected.

We had not walked into Daniel’s wedding alone.

May you like

By the time we walked out, the entire crowd knew exactly who had been abandoned.

And it was not him.
