Chapter 10 - Olivia Took the Witness StandThe first hearing was packed.

Not because custody hearings were usually public entertainment, but because Daniel had made himself a spectacle. Society women who had attended the failed wedding sent messages of support. Local reporters waited outside the courthouse. Daniel arrived in a dark suit with his attorney and a face carefully arranged into wounded dignity.
He looked like a man auditioning for sympathy.
I arrived with Vanessa.
The children stayed with my best friend, Claire. I refused to parade them into court the way Daniel had accused me of parading them at the wedding. They were not props. They were not proof. They were children.
Daniel looked annoyed when he saw they weren’t there.
Good.
Vanessa presented the letters first.
The certified mail.
The emails.
The legal notice from Daniel’s company attorney.
Then she played the recorded phone call.
Daniel’s voice filled the courtroom.
“You embarrassed me.”
“If you fight me, I will make sure they learn exactly what kind of woman their mother is.”
His attorney objected. Vanessa was ready. The judge allowed enough of it to stand.
Daniel stared straight ahead.
His face did not move, but his ears turned red.
Then Olivia entered.
A murmur moved through the room.
She wore a simple black dress, no jewelry except small pearl earrings. She looked calm, but I saw the tension in her hands.
Daniel’s attorney tried to paint her as bitter.
“Miss Vale, isn’t it true you were humiliated by Mr. Hart’s former wife?”
Olivia looked at him evenly.
“No. I was humiliated by Mr. Hart.”
A few people shifted in their seats.
The attorney pressed on. “You ended your engagement under emotional pressure.”
“I ended it after learning my fiancé had lied about his former wife, his children, and his business interests.”
Daniel looked down.
Olivia continued.
“He invited Emily Carter to our wedding intending to shame her. He told me so in private. He knew the gown came from her atelier. He thought it was amusing.”
Her voice wavered, but she kept going.
“He told me she was beneath us.”
My throat tightened.
Daniel’s attorney tried to stop her. “Speculation.”
Olivia turned toward the judge.
“Your Honor, I was going to marry him. I know what he said when no cameras were around.”
The judge took notes.
Then Vanessa asked one question.
“Miss Vale, based on what you witnessed, do you believe Mr. Hart’s sudden interest in the children is motivated by their well-being?”
Olivia looked at Daniel.
For a second, grief crossed her face. Not love. Grief for the person she had imagined him to be.
“No,” she said. “I believe it is motivated by control.”
The courtroom went quiet.
Daniel’s mask slipped.
Only for a moment.
But the judge saw it.
When the temporary order came, Daniel was granted no unsupervised visitation. Paternity testing would proceed. Any contact with the children would be gradual, therapeutic, and approved by the court.
It was not a total victory.
But Daniel walked out looking furious.
I walked out breathing.
Outside the courthouse, reporters shouted questions.
I ignored them.
Then Olivia stepped beside me.
“I’m sorry,” she said again.
This time, I answered differently.
“I know.”
She nodded.
We stood there, two women Daniel had lied to, no longer enemies because the same man had tried to make us compete for the privilege of being deceived.
Across the courthouse steps, Daniel stopped and looked back at us.

For the first time, he seemed to understand.
We were stronger together than we had ever been apart.
