Chapter 4 - Vanessa’s SmileJake did not remember driving to Beverly Hills.

Jake Mercer’s voice cracked so badly he almost did not recognize it.
On the other end of the line, Patricia Brennan remained silent for one measured second, the kind of silence that belonged to people who were paid to destroy men politely.
“Your wife is safe,” she said. “That is all you need to know.”
“She is nine months pregnant.”
“Thirty-six weeks,” Patricia corrected. “And because she is thirty-six weeks pregnant, emotionally distressed, and under medical supervision, I strongly advise you not to make this more difficult than it already is.”
Jake stood in the dining room with Emily’s final anniversary card in his hand. The chocolate cake sat untouched between the burned-out candles. His stomach rolled as if the house itself had tilted.
“I need to talk to her,” he said. “Just let me hear her voice.”
“No.”
“That is my wife.”
“Soon to be your ex-wife.”
The words landed harder than he expected.
Jake looked at the empty chair across from him. Emily had sat there the night before, waiting for him, touching her pregnant belly, probably telling their unborn daughter that Daddy would be home soon.
He pressed his palm to his eyes.
“Patricia, please.”
“Mr. Mercer, your wife asked me to be very clear. Any attempt to contact her directly, show up at her family’s property, appear at her doctor’s office, or send anyone on your behalf will be documented.”
“Documented for what?”
“For court.”
Jake went still.
The house suddenly seemed too quiet.
“You’re threatening me?”
“I am informing you. There is a difference.”
“I haven’t done anything illegal.”
Patricia gave a small breath, almost a laugh, but colder.
“Then you should have nothing to worry about.”
Something in her tone made Jake’s blood cool.
“What does that mean?”
“It means your wife has filed for divorce. It means she is requesting temporary exclusive use of marital assets necessary for her health and the baby’s health. It means she has provided documentation regarding emotional abandonment, financial misconduct, and misuse of company funds.”
Jake gripped the back of a dining chair.
“Company funds?”
“Your corporate card was not designed to purchase diamond earrings for Vanessa Cole.”
His heart stopped.
The name sounded obscene in his wife’s lawyer’s voice.
“How do you know about that?”
“Mr. Mercer, your wife knows about many things.”
Jake’s mind flashed through the last three months. Hotel rooms. Cash withdrawals. Expensive dinners marked as client relations. Vanessa laughing as she signed for room service on his card. Emily sitting across from him at breakfast, quiet, tired, one hand on her belly.
She had known.
All that time, she had known.
“You have until five p.m. to vacate the marital home,” Patricia said.
“What?”
“Emily purchased the property before the marriage. You signed a postnuptial agreement four years ago affirming her separate ownership after your first funding round.”
Jake swallowed.
He remembered the agreement. He remembered barely reading it. He remembered laughing when Emily said her father insisted on protecting the house.
He had kissed her forehead and said, “Baby, what’s yours is ours.”
Now the words mocked him.
“You can’t throw me out of my own home.”
“It is not your home.”
Jake looked around the dining room. The chandelier Emily had chosen. The curtains she had sewn because she said custom ones were too expensive. The framed black-and-white wedding photo on the wall.
Not his home.
Not anymore.
“I built everything for her,” Jake whispered.
“No,” Patricia said. “She stood beside you while you built it. There is a difference.”
Before he could answer, another call came through.
Mercer Dynamics Board Office.
Jake stared at the screen.
Patricia spoke again.
“You should answer that.”
“How do you know who’s calling?”
“Because I sent them the packet forty minutes ago.”
The line went dead.
Jake stood frozen with the phone in his hand.
The second call kept ringing.
By the time he answered, his mouth had gone dry.
“This is Jake.”
A man’s voice came through, tight and formal.
“Jake, it’s Warren. We need you at headquarters immediately.”
“Why?”
Another pause.
“Because the board has called an emergency meeting.”
Jake looked down at Emily’s ring on the table.
The gold band caught the morning light.

And for the first time in years, Jake Mercer understood that he was no longer the one holding power.
He was the one being summoned.
