Chapter 13 - The Boardroom TrapMartin Danton made his final mistake because he underestimated Emily Mercer twice.

Emily saw her from the upstairs window before the doorbell rang.

The woman looked different without hotel lighting and champagne confidence. Her blonde hair was tucked beneath a black scarf. Her coat was soaked at the shoulders. She carried no purse, only a large manila envelope pressed against her chest.

Emily’s first instinct was fear.

Her second was rage.

Her third was to check that Harper was asleep in the bassinet.

Aunt Clara came down the hallway holding a fireplace poker.

Emily stared at her.

“Where did you get that?”

“Fireplace.”

“We don’t have a fire going.”

“I’m aware.”

The doorbell rang again.

Daniel appeared behind them, already calling Patricia.

Emily took a breath.

“I want to know what she wants.”

Clara tightened her grip on the poker.

“She wants trouble.”

“Then she found the right porch.”

Emily opened the door but kept the chain locked.

Vanessa stood on the other side, rain dripping from her lashes.

“Emily.”

Hearing her name in that woman’s voice nearly made Emily shut the door.

“What do you want?”

Vanessa looked past her.

“I need to speak with you.”

“No.”

“I have information about Danton Ridge.”

Emily’s hand tightened on the door.

“Give it to my attorney.”

“They’ll bury it before it reaches her.”

Daniel’s voice came from behind Emily.

“Step away from the door.”

Vanessa glanced at him.

“I deserve that.”

“You deserve worse,” Emily said.

Vanessa looked back at her.

For the first time, there was no smirk.

“Yes.”

The rain filled the silence.

Emily hated how thin Vanessa looked. She hated noticing the bruise-colored shadows under her eyes. She hated that part of her could recognize another trapped woman even when that woman had helped destroy her marriage.

“Why come here?” Emily asked.

“Because Martin Danton is going to force the acquisition by targeting your loan. If that fails, he’ll attack your credibility. He already has photos. Medical records may be next.”

Emily went cold.

“My medical records?”

Vanessa held up the envelope.

“I have proof.”

Daniel reached for the door.

Emily stopped him.

“Slide it through.”

Vanessa hesitated.

“There’s more.”

“Slide it through.”

Slowly, Vanessa pushed the envelope through the gap beneath the door.

Emily picked it up.

Inside were printed emails, payment records, encrypted message screenshots, and a copy of a contract between Vanessa and Danton Ridge. Patricia would need to verify them, but even Emily could see the pattern.

Jake had been a target.

So had she.

Vanessa had been paid to get close, extract information, destabilize him emotionally, and create leverage if necessary.

Emily looked through the pages with a trembling hand.

“You were proud of this?” she whispered.

Vanessa flinched.

“I told myself it was business.”

“You sent me that message.”

“I know.”

“I was sitting in my daughter’s nursery when I read it.”

Vanessa’s eyes filled, but she did not cry.

“I know.”

Emily’s voice dropped.

“No, you don’t.”

Vanessa looked away.

For a moment, the rain was the only sound.

Then she said, “I had a daughter once.”

The hallway went still.

Emily did not move.

Vanessa’s face twisted briefly, like the sentence had escaped without permission.

“She died when she was six weeks old. Heart defect. I went back to work too soon. Became very good at not feeling anything.”

Emily’s anger did not disappear.

It shifted shape.

“That does not excuse what you did.”

“No,” Vanessa said. “It explains why I recognized the look on Jake’s face when he talked about fatherhood like it was a trap. I should have hated him for it. Instead, I used it.”

Emily stared at her.

“Why help me now?”

Vanessa gave a small, broken laugh.

“Because Danton showed me photos of Harper and called her leverage.”

The word made Emily’s stomach turn.

Behind her, Harper began to cry upstairs.

Vanessa closed her eyes.

The sound seemed to strike her physically.

Emily stepped back from the door.

“Leave.”

Vanessa nodded.

“I will testify.”

Emily looked at her.

“In court?”

“In court. To the board. To the press. Wherever it hurts Danton most.”

“You think that redeems you?”

“No.” Vanessa pulled her scarf tighter. “I think redemption is too expensive for people like me.”

Emily almost shut the door.

Then Vanessa said one final thing.

“Jake did not send the SUV.”

Emily froze.

“How do you know?”

“Because I did.”

Daniel swore under his breath.

Vanessa lifted both hands.

“I was told to confirm your location. I did not know you would go into labor.”

Emily’s face went white.

“You watched me while I was in pain.”

Vanessa’s voice broke.

“Yes.”

Emily’s hand closed around the envelope.

“Then testify,” she said. “And after that, never come to my door again.”

Vanessa nodded once.

Emily shut the door.

Upstairs, Harper cried harder.

Emily ran to her daughter, lifted her, and held her close.

Downstairs, Clara locked every bolt.

Outside, Vanessa stood in the rain for several seconds before walking away.

By morning, the envelope would change everything.

May you like

But that night, Emily did not think about boards or lawsuits or acquisitions.

She held Harper against her heart and whispered, “No one uses you as leverage. Not ever.”
