Chapter 2 - The Secret Under the Floorboards

The days following that horrific afternoon turned the Collins home into a battlefield of silence. David immediately moved Emily into his own bedroom, locking the door every night. He refused to look at Lauren, let alone speak to her. But he knew he couldn't just walk away yet. Lauren was clever; she had spent two years building the image of a perfect, doting stepmother to their friends and neighbors. If he filed for divorce without absolute proof of her systematic abuse, a family court might still grant her partial custody or visitation rights. He could not risk Emily ever being alone with her again.

Lauren, sensing her control slipping, changed her tactics. She went from aggressive to deeply apologetic, leaving baked goods on the counter and sending long, weeping text messages to David about how "stressed" she had been.

"I just want what's best for our family, David," she pleaded one evening outside his bedroom door. "Being a stepmother is hard. I snapped, and I'm so sorry. Let's go to counseling. Don't ruin our marriage over one mistake."

David sat on the edge of the bed, holding a sleeping Emily close. He didn't answer. He knew it wasn't one mistake. He started looking back at the past two years with a terrifying new clarity—the sudden "accidents" Emily had, the way the little girl shrank back whenever Lauren entered a room, and how Emily’s bright, bubbly personality had slowly withered into a quiet, fearful ghost.

The next morning, while Lauren was out running errands, David decided to thoroughly search the house. He started with Emily’s room. He knelt by the closet, looking for anything unusual. As he pushed aside a pile of old winter clothes, he noticed something odd about the wooden floorboards in the corner. One of them was slightly raised, the nails loose.

Using a small pocketknife, David carefully pried the board open.

Deep within the dark space beneath the floor sat a dust-covered metal lockbox. David’s heart hammered against his ribs. He carried it to the garage, found a heavy pair of pliers, and snapped the cheap lock open.

Inside the box lay a treasure trove of malice.

There were dozens of letters, unopened and hidden away. They were from Emily’s maternal grandparents—the parents of David's late wife—who lived in Canada. For two years, Lauren had told David that his first wife's family had abandoned them, refusing to call or visit. In reality, they had been writing constantly, sending birthday cards, love, and even bank checks for Emily’s future. Lauren had intercepted every single one.

But that wasn't the worst thing in the box.

At the very bottom was a small, leather-bound journal. David opened it. Written in Lauren’s neat, elegant handwriting were daily logs. It wasn't a diary of love; it was a cold, calculated record of how she was systematically alienating Emily from David.

"July 14th: David thinks Emily lost her favorite necklace. I hid it in the trash. The girl cried for hours. David scolded her for being careless. Perfect. He is starting to see her as a burden."

"October 2nd: Put a small pinch of laxative in the girl's milk. She soiled herself at school. David had to leave work early. He was furious with her. The gap between them grows wider every day."

David dropped the journal, his hands shaking violently, a wave of absolute nausea washing over him. The woman he had let into his home wasn't just mean—she was a psychological monster who was intentionally destroying a seven-year-old child's life just to have David and his modest life all to herself.

Suddenly, the garage door began to roll up. The headlights of Lauren’s car cut through the dim afternoon light.

David didn't hide the box. He stood there in the center of the garage, holding the journal in his hand, waiting as Lauren stepped out of the vehicle with a bright, fake smile on her face.
