PART 8: The Breaking Point

The flashing red and blue lights of the police cars painted the hotel lobby in eerie shadows. My father was led out in handcuffs, his head bowed, refusing to look me in the eye. The shame that he had worked so hard to escape had trapped him once again.
I sat on the curb outside the hotel, the rain soaking through my shirt, feeling utterly defeated. Vanessa had won. The media would have a field day with this: “Grandfather of Custody Children Arrested for Assault.” No judge in the country would let my kids stay in a household surrounded by this much chaos.
Vance arrived an hour later, securing my father’s release on bail, but his expression was grim when we met outside the precinct.
"It’s bad, Arthur," Vance admitted, handing me a dry towel. "Vanessa’s team has already filed for an emergency hearing tomorrow morning. They are using the arrest to claim immediate emotional and physical danger to the children. The judge is highly likely to grant temporary custody to Vanessa pending the full trial."
"Temporary custody?" I whispered, my voice breaking. "She'll take them out of the state. She'll put them on that TV show. I'll lose them, Marcus."
"Not yet," Vance said, his eyes narrowing. "We have the anonymous financial documents you received. If we can verify the source and prove her financial fraud and the TV show contract, we can turn the tide. But we need the source to stand up in court tomorrow. Do you know who sent that email?"
I shook my head. "It was completely anonymous."
"Then find them," Vance said. "You have twelve hours."
I went back to my apartment, my mind working at a feverish pace. I sat at my laptop, analyzing the email metadata, tracing IP addresses, desperate for a clue. The clock was ticking. 3:00 AM. 4:00 AM.
Then, I noticed a tiny detail in one of the scanned documents attached to the email. In the corner of a bank statement, there was a faint watermarked logo of a local law firm—the very firm representing Vanessa.
Someone on her own legal team was leaking information.
I took a gamble. I drove to the law firm’s office building at 6:00 AM, waiting in the parking garage. When the employees began to arrive, I watched every face. Finally, I saw her—a young paralegal named Chloe whom I had noticed sitting behind Vanessa’s lead attorney during our initial depositions. She looked anxious, looking over her shoulder as she walked toward the elevator.
I stepped out of my car and intercepted her. "Chloe."
She jumped, her briefcase slipping from her hand. "Arthur? What are you doing here? I can't talk to you, it's a conflict of interest."
"You sent the email," I said bluntly, helping her pick up her papers. "You know what she's planning to do to my kids. You know about the reality TV show."
Chloe’s eyes flooded with tears. She looked around frantically before pulling me into a quiet corner of the garage. "She’s a monster, Arthur. I've listened to her talk about your kids like they're cattle. She laughs about how she's going to exploit them for ratings. I couldn't sit by and watch it happen. But if I testify, my career is over. I'll be disbarred before I even start."
"If you don't testify, she takes my children today," I pleaded, my voice cracking with desperation. "I am begging you, as a father. Please. Don't let her destroy their lives."

Chloe stared at me, the conflict tearing her apart. The clock read 7:30 AM. The emergency hearing was in one hour.
"Get your lawyer," she finally whispered, wiping her face. "I'll do it."
