PART 7: Secrets and Betrayals

The revelation of Vanessa’s extortion attempt shifted the war into a darker gear. I showed the text message to Marcus Vance, who immediately brought it to the attention of the court, but Vanessa’s lawyers smoothly countered, claiming her phone had been "spoofed" by a third party trying to frame her. Without definitive proof linking the device to her, the judge could only issue a generic warning.
But the pressure was fracturing our daily life. Mia started wetting the bed again—a habit she had broken years ago. Harry became intensely clingy, refusing to go to preschool unless I stayed in the classroom. Aidan, trying to be the man of the house, grew quiet and distant, his grades slipping from straight A’s to failing marks.
One evening, as I was reviewing financial spreadsheets at the kitchen island, trying to figure out how to pay Vance’s escalating legal fees, my phone buzzed. It was an email from an anonymous account.
The subject line read: The Truth About Vanessa’s Wealth.
I opened it, my heart hammering against my ribs. Inside was a treasure trove of financial documents, bank statements, and legal correspondence. As I scrolled through the pages, the pieces of the puzzle began to fall into place. Vanessa wasn't a wealthy, successful woman returning for her children out of a sudden burst of maternal love.
She was completely broke.
The millionaire boyfriend she had left us for had not only dumped her, but he had also sued her for corporate espionage and embezzlement. She was facing a massive civil judgment in another state. The mansion she claimed to own was rented on a short-term lease, paid for by a mysterious shell company.
But the most shocking piece of evidence was a contract between Vanessa and a high-profile media production company. They were developing a reality television show about "High-Society Mothers Reclaiming Their Broken Families."
She didn't want our children because she loved them. She wanted them as props for a television show that would relaunch her career and pay off her multi-million-dollar debts.
"My God," I whispered, the sheer depravity of her plan sickening me.
I immediately called Vance, but before I could press send, a knock sounded at the door. It was my mother. She looked frantic, her face streaked with tears.
"Arthur, it's your father," she sobbed, collapsing into my arms. "He’s gone."
"What do you mean gone? Mom, calm down, what happened?"
"He found out about the reality TV contract this afternoon from an old business contact," she gasped. "He was so angry, Arthur. He said he was going to fix this. He said he wouldn't let his past ruin your future. I found a note on his desk. He went to Vanessa’s hotel to confront her."
Panic, cold and sharp, flooded my veins. My father was in recovery, but his temperament under extreme stress was volatile. If he assaulted her or caused a public scene, Vanessa’s lawyers would use it as ultimate proof that my family was dangerous and unstable.
"Stay here with the kids, Mom," I ordered, grabbing my car keys. "Don't let anyone in."
I sped through the rainy city streets, my mind racing. I arrived at the luxury hotel where Vanessa was staying and sprinted through the lobby. When I reached her floor, the sound of shouting guided me down the hallway.
Outside room 405, two hotel security guards were trying to restrain my father. Vanessa stood in the doorway, her hair slightly disheveled, shouting at the top of her lungs.
"He’s crazy! He threatened me!" she screamed as hotel guests peered out of their rooms. "Look at him! This is the kind of man Arthur lets around my children!"
"You're a monster, Vanessa!" my father roared, his face red, struggling against the guards. "You are using those babies for money! I will die before I let you touch them!"

"Dad! Stop!" I yelled, rushing forward and throwing my body between my father and the guards. "Stop fighting! Please!"
Vanessa looked at me, a cruel smirk playing on her lips amidst her fake tears. "Perfect timings, Arthur. The police are already on their way. Your father is going to jail, and tomorrow, a judge will sign the emergency custody order. You lose."
