Chapter 3 - The Ledger of Lies

The interrogation room at the county sheriff’s substation smelled of stale coffee, old floor wax, and damp coats.

Harold and Ethan sat on one side of the heavy oak table, while Trooper Vance and a senior investigator named Soto sat opposite them. Across the metal barrier, flanked by a public defender who looked like he wanted to be anywhere else in the world, sat Megan.

She had stopped crying. Her face was an unreadable mask of cold defiance.

"Let’s start with the financial records we recovered from your bedroom closet, Mrs. Miller," Investigator Soto said, sliding a thick stack of bank statements across the table. "Specifically, the wire transfers originating from your personal account to an offshore entity in the Cayman Islands."

Megan didn't look at the papers. "I managed the household budget. People invest."

"People invest," Soto repeated smoothly. "People also gamble away their daughter's college fund, take out unauthorized second mortgages on their suburban homes, and rack up four hundred thousand dollars in high-interest digital debt to cover underground poker syndicates."

Ethan’s head snapped toward his wife. "What? Four hundred thousand dollars?!"

Megan flinched, casting a sharp, defensive glare at her husband. "You were never home, Ethan! Always building your business, always working late, leaving me to keep up appearances in this neighborhood! Do you have any idea how much it costs to look like we belong here? The country club dues, the charity boards, the fundraisers—it all piled up!"

"And what does that have to do with our daughter?" Ethan’s voice trembled, raw and shaking with a fury that was threatening to break his restraint. "Why did you drug her?!"

Megan’s jaw tightened. "I didn't want to hurt her."

"You gave her a pediatric sedative every single afternoon so she wouldn't make noise while you were on your phone or hosting your little bridge club meetings!" Harold roared, slamming his fist against the wooden table so hard the coffee mugs rattled. "She was a prop to you, Megan! A quiet little doll you could dress up and put on a shelf while you played high society with money you didn't have!"

"That's not true!" Megan shrieked, tears finally spilling over her lashes. "I had to keep her calm! There were men coming to the house—debt collectors, loan sharks! If Sophie cried, if she interrupted, if anyone saw how chaotic our lives really were—they would have taken everything! The mortgage default notice was arriving tomorrow!"

The room fell dead silent.

The fluorescent light overhead hummed a low, abrasive note.

Ethan stared at his wife, the woman he had loved for nine years, the mother of his child. The illusion had completely burned away, leaving behind a stranger draped in desperation and deceit.

"You were going to use her," Ethan whispered, the realization cutting deeper than any knife. "Weren't you? If the debt collectors closed in... you were going to use Sophie as leverage, or worse, pack her up and run."

Megan looked down at her hands, her silence serving as a full, damning confession.

Investigator Soto closed the file folder with a sharp snap. "Mrs. Miller, you are being formally charged with child endangerment, administration of unauthorized controlled substances, and financial fraud. This interview is concluded."

As the public defender gently touched Megan’s arm and guided her toward the holding cells, she didn't look back at Ethan.

She walked out without a single word of apology.
