Chapter 2 - The Empty Nest

The drive back to Ethan and Megan’s suburban house felt like escorting a prisoner to a tribunal.

Ethan rode in the front passenger seat of Harold’s truck, staring blankly at the dashboard, clutching the crumpled medical report as though it were a anchor keeping him from drowning. In the back, Sophie had stirred slightly, murmuring something about Barnaby before drifting back into a heavy, medicated slumber.

When Harold pulled into the driveway, the house was ablaze with light.

Every single window on the lower floor glared into the evening darkness. The front door stood ajar by three inches.

Ethan scrambled out of the truck first, his boots hitting the pavement with heavy thuds. "Megan!" he yelled, pushing the front door wide open. "Megan, where are you?!"

Harold followed closely behind, carrying Sophie carefully in his arms, her head resting securely against his flannel shoulder. State Trooper Vance and the social workers moved in behind them, securing the perimeter.

The house was immaculate.

The white tile floor gleamed. The marble countertops in the kitchen were wiped spotless. But the air felt wrong—stale, tense, and heavy with the scent of bleach.

At the end of the hallway leading to the master suite, the door to Megan’s walk-in closet was open. Clothes were strewn across the carpet. Hangers lay broken on the floor. Drawers were pulled halfway out, spilling financial statements, checkbooks, and passport folders across the cedar floorboards.

Megan was standing by the vanity mirror, her hands shaking violently as she tried to zip a heavy leather travel duffel.

"Megan," Ethan whispered, his voice cracking with a mixture of agony and disbelief. "What is all this?"

Megan froze. She turned slowly around, her cream sweater slightly stained at the cuff, her chestnut hair pulled back in a frantic ponytail. The polite, polished mask she wore for the neighborhood was completely shattered, replaced by the wild, desperate eyes of a cornered animal.

"Ethan," she breathed, taking a half-step forward. "Thank God. You have to listen to me. Your father—your father has completely lost his mind. He’s staging some kind of—of kidnapping—"

"Shut up, Megan," Ethan said.

The three words didn't sound like Ethan. They sounded like a stranger’s voice, hollowed out by grief and fury.

Megan blinked, her lower lip trembling. "Ethan, baby, you know me. I’m your wife. I gave you a family. I take care of Sophie—"

"With antihistamines?" Harold stepped into the bedroom, lowering Sophie gently onto a nearby armchair where she remained fast asleep. He turned to face his daughter-in-law, his shoulders squaring. "With a sedative so heavy it nearly caused respiratory depression? We have the clinic lab work, Megan. We have the doctor’s official report. And we have your own voice on speaker admitting you knew about it."

Trooper Vance stepped past Harold, his hand resting casually near his holster. "Mrs. Miller, you need to step away from the luggage."

Megan looked from the trooper to Ethan, realizing with sudden, horrifying clarity that her carefully constructed life had run out of road.

She let out a harsh, jagged laugh, wiping a tear from her cheek with the back of her hand.

"You don't understand," she whispered, her voice dropping into a bitter, venomous hiss. "You have no idea what was coming for us."
