Chapter 3 - Shadows of the Syndicate

The technical team spent the next three hours tearing through the estate’s structural blueprints.

Guided by Sophie’s quiet observations, Marcus focused the thermal and acoustic scanners on the thick mahogany-paneled wall between the library and the master suite.

At 2:15 AM, they found it.

Behind a concealed access panel inside the library chimney, hidden behind decades of brickwork, was a secondary relay transmitter. But this one wasn't an emitter—it was a transmitter. A high-gain listening device plugged directly into the estate's primary fiber-optic network.

"It's been active for at least six months," Marcus said, his forehead dripping with sweat as he traced the wires. "Boss... whoever put this here hasn't just been targeting the babies. They've been listening to every board meeting, every private phone call, and every security protocol you've discussed in this room."

Adrien stood in the center of the library, the dark timber of the room casting long shadows around him. His jaw was set in iron.

"Trace the signal output," Adrien commanded flatly. "Where is the data being sent?"

Marcus tapped rapidly on his laptop, tracing the encrypted IP routing through multiple proxy servers in Switzerland and Panama. After ten agonizing minutes, a physical address resolved on the screen.

"It's bouncing to a server registered under a holding company in lower Manhattan," Marcus said, looking up with a grim expression. "The shell corporation is registered to... Julian Moretti."

Adrien didn't react with anger. His calm became deadlier, absolute.

Julian. His own half-brother.

Julian hadn't just been trying to prove Adrien unfit; he had been feeding internal security codes to rival syndicates while using the acoustic emitter to break Adrien’s resolve, sleep-deprive him, and force him into a nervous breakdown.

Adrien turned slowly toward the door where Clara was standing nervously, holding a sleeping Sophie in her arms.

"Clara," Adrien said, his voice softer now. "Your daughter saved my children tonight. If she hadn't jammed that emitter with her doll, Dr. Cole would have had the triplets admitted to a psychiatric medical ward by morning. Julian would have used that to seize emergency guardianship of my family and my company."

Clara swallowed hard, tears rising in her eyes. "I... I just wanted her to have a safe place to grow up, Mr. Moretti. When my husband died last year, we had nowhere else to go."

Adrien walked over to Clara. He looked down at Sophie's peaceful face as she slept soundly in her mother's arms.

"You will never have to worry about a place to live again," Adrien said firmly. "Starting tonight, you are no longer a maid in this house. You are the chief supervisor of the estate's residential staff. Your salary will be quadrupled, and Sophie will have private security assigned to her around the clock."

Clara covered her mouth, gasping. "Mr. Moretti... I can't accept—"

"You can, and you will," Adrien interrupted gently. "Because tomorrow morning, we are going to drop a trap for my brother. And I need someone I can trust completely to keep my children safe while I finish this."
