Chapter 5 - The Confrontation

I didn't knock. I pushed the heavy mahogany door open, the wood clicking against the brass stopper with a sound like a gunshot.

David snapped his head around, slamming his gold-rimmed phone down on the glass desk. He stood there, his expensive tuxedo jacket perfectly tailored, but his face went completely pale, his eyes wide with a sudden, suffocating terror.

"Hello, David," I said calmly, stepping into the room and closing the door behind me.

Ethan stood beside me, his small body rigid, his eyes locked onto his father's face. "Dad..." he whispered, a heartbreaking mix of hope and agony in his voice.

David looked at his son, and for a fraction of a second, I saw a flicker of the man he used to be. His chest heaved, his hand twitching toward Ethan as if a remnant of a father’s instinct was trying to break through the armor of his greed.

But then, the coldness returned. The calculation.

"Sarah," David said, his voice dropping into a low, dangerous register. He didn't use the Julian Vance accent anymore. He sounded exactly like the man who used to tell me he loved me every night. "You shouldn't have come here. You have no idea what you're interfering with."

"Interfering with?" A bitter, humorless laugh tore from my throat. "You faked your death, David! You let your son believe his father was torn apart by a storm! I spent three years drowning in medical bills, funeral costs, and grief, while you were drinking champagne in first class with a billionaire's daughter!"

"It wasn't about the money, Sarah!" David took a step forward, his hands raised in a plea that felt entirely synthetic. "Vanguard Tech... they weren't just a contractor. They were laundering money for international cartels through their software. I found out. They gave me a choice: either I die for real, or I help them build a new financial routing network under a new identity and live like a king. If I stayed, they would have killed you and Ethan to keep me quiet!"

"So you saved yourself and left us to suffer?" I hissed, stepping closer to the desk. "You’re a coward, David. You didn't do this to protect us. You did this because you wanted the $50 million sitting in the Phoenix account."

"Sarah, listen to me carefully," David whispered, his eyes darting toward the security monitors on his wall. "Victoria’s father... he owns the police in this district. If you try to walk out of here with those files, you won't make it to the airport. Hand over the laptop. I will transfer $10 million to a Swiss account for you and Ethan tonight. You can live wherever you want. Just let Julian Vance live his life."

"No," Ethan’s small voice echoed through the massive office.

David blinked, looking down at his son.

Ethan stepped forward, his fists clenched, tears tracking down his cheeks. "You're not my dad. My dad was a good man. He used to build block towers with me. He used to draw doors on everything because he said a house should always welcome the people we love. You... you’re just a monster wearing his face."

David flinched as if he had been physically struck. The words of his nine-year-old son sliced through his polished exterior, exposing the hollow, rotten core of his ambition.

Before David could answer, the office door burst open.

Victoria Sterling stood in the entrance, her eyes flashing with a lethal, aristocratic fury. Behind her stood two massive estate security guards holding silenced firearms.

"Well, well, Julian," Victoria sneered, looking from me to David with complete contempt. "I knew your background check from New York was a bit too clean. I didn't realize you had a pathetic little family trailing behind you like baggage."

David panicked, stepping in front of his desk. "Victoria, please, I can handle this. She has the decryption keys. If we touch her, the files are set to automatically release to the federal regulators."

"Do you think I care about the federal regulators, Julian?" Victoria laughed, a cold, chilling sound. "My father funds the politicians who appoint those regulators. But what I won't tolerate is a liar in my boardroom. And I certainly won't tolerate a man who thinks he can use my family’s empire to hide his cheap, dirty secrets."

She looked at her security guards, her voice turning completely flat. "Take all three of them down to the yacht at the private dock. We’ll handle this out on the water. A tragic boating accident runs in the family, doesn't it, David?"
