Chapter 4 - The Golden Cage

"Ethan, get your shoes on. Now!" I yelled, slamming my laptop shut and tossing it into my bag.
"Mom, what's wrong?" he asked, startled by the sheer panic in my voice.
"We have to leave. Right now," I said, grabbing his hand and pulling him toward the hotel room door.
We didn't take the elevator. We ran down the concrete stairwell, my heart hammering against my ribs. As we burst through the side exit into the humid Miami night, I saw a sleek, black sedan with tinted windows pulling up to the front entrance of the hotel. Two men in sharp, identical dark suits stepped out, their eyes scanning the lobby with predatory precision.
They were looking for us.
We scrambled into a local taxi parked across the street. "Drive," I told the driver, handing him a hundred-dollar bill. "Just drive toward the downtown area. Fast."
As the taxi merged into the highway traffic, I opened my laptop again, keeping the screen shielded from view. The trace had been stopped when I disconnected from the hotel Wi-Fi, but they knew I was in Miami. They knew I had accessed the files.
If Julian Vance—David—was a powerful man now, he would have resources. But a man who fakes his death to protect a stolen fortune has one critical vulnerability: exposure. He couldn't afford for the world to find out who he really was.
I spent the next two hours digging into the public records of Julian Vance. It didn't take long to find him. In Miami, Julian Vance was a rising star in the luxury real estate market, partnered with the blonde woman from the plane—Victoria Sterling, the daughter of a billionaire Miami developer. They were hosting a private, exclusive charity gala tonight at a multi-million-dollar mansion in Coral Gables to launch their newest high-rise project.
"Mom, where are we going?" Ethan asked quietly, looking out at the flashing neon signs of the city.
"We're going to a party, Ethan," I said, a cold, dangerous resolve settling deep into my bones. "We're going to get some answers."
We stopped at a local department store. I bought a classic, elegant black cocktail dress that made me blend in with the high-society crowd, and a clean, smart suit for Ethan. We didn't have an invitation to the Sterling Gala, but I knew that in the world of the ultra-rich, the back door was always accessible if you looked like you belonged.
By 9:00 PM, the taxi dropped us off a block away from the sprawling, Mediterranean-style estate in Coral Gables. The air was filled with the sound of live jazz, clinking champagne glasses, and the low chatter of Miami’s elite.
Valet drivers were moving Lamborghinis and Ferraris down the palm-lined driveway. Security guards in tuxedos stood at the front gates, checking names off an electronic tablet.
I led Ethan around the perimeter of the estate, following a thick stone wall until we reached the service entrance near the catering tents. A young waiter, looking overwhelmed by a tray of crystal champagne flutes, was rushing past.
"Excuse me," I said, offering him a warm, dazzling smile. "I'm with the event coordination team. We need to deliver these extra documents to Mr. Vance’s private study immediately. Which way is the service elevator?"
The kid, completely stressed by the high-profile nature of the party, pointed toward a side glass door. "Second floor, end of the hall. But you shouldn't be up there, Mr. Vance is furious tonight about some security breach."
"Thank you," I murmured.
I gripped Ethan's hand tightly, slipping through the glass door and stepping into the air-conditioned opulence of the mansion. The floors were pure white marble, the walls adorned with modern art worth more than my entire life’s savings.
We walked up the winding service staircase, bypassing the main ballroom where the music roared. As we reached the second-floor gallery, I saw a heavy, dark mahogany door at the end of the hall.
The door was slightly ajar.

From inside, a voice exploded in a harsh, venomous whisper. It was the mid-Atlantic accent, but the mask of "Julian Vance" was entirely gone. Beneath it was the raw, frantic panic of the man I used to share a bed with.
"I told you to scrub the server!" David hissed into a phone. "She accessed the Phoenix files from a hotel in downtown Miami! If she leaks those transaction codes to the SEC, the entire Vanguard project collapses, and we all go to federal prison! Find her, find the boy, and silence them before they leave the state!"
