Chapter 2 - The Billionaire's Secret

Within twenty minutes, the three men were zip-tied, hooded, and dragged into the subterranean security wing of the mansion. The estate returned to its pristine, silent discipline as if nothing had happened, but inside the main office, the atmosphere was charged with a heavy, unspoken gravity.
Maria sat in the leather armchair opposite Adrian’s massive mahogany desk. Alina was fast asleep in a small carrier beside her, exhausted from the morning's terror.
Adrian poured two cups of black coffee, sliding one across the desk toward me. His knuckles were bruised—not from the men at the gate, but from a life long before he inherited the Hale empire, a past he kept buried beneath boardrooms and billions.
"Drink it," Adrian said quietly. "It’ll stop your hands from shaking."
I picked up the porcelain cup, my fingers trembling slightly. "Who... who are they, Mr. Hale? How did you know who Victor was before he even spoke?"
Adrian leaned back, resting his elbows on the arms of his leather chair. The cold, unreadable mask he wore for the business world had slipped away, revealing something far more dangerous—and far more protective.
"Because I used to hunt men like Victor, Maria," he said evenly. "Before my father died and forced me into this suit, I ran international asset recovery and corporate security for high-risk clients. When you told me your story last night... when you described the way Victor stalked you across three states... I didn't just hear a domestic dispute. I heard a professional syndicate trying to silence someone who knew too much."
I stared at him, my breath catching in my throat. "What do you mean? I was just an accountant for one of their front companies. I found the ledger entries... millions of dollars moving through shell accounts. When I tried to leave, they threatened to kill me and my baby."
"They weren't just laundering money, Maria," Adrian said, opening a encrypted folder on his tablet and sliding it toward me. "They were funding illegal arms shipments through your father’s old logistics network. Victor and his bosses thought that by terrorizing you into hiding, you’d stay quiet forever. They underestimated what a mother will endure to keep her child safe."
He paused, his dark eyes locking onto mine. "And they severely underestimated what I do when someone brings violence to my doorstep."

"Why?" I whispered, tears blurring my vision. "Why go to such lengths for a housekeeper? You didn't even know me three weeks ago."
Adrian looked down at his desk, a rare shadow crossing his features. "People think I'm cold, Maria. They think I don't feel things. But the moment Alina walked into my office—the moment she reached for me when she wouldn't let anyone else touch her—something shifted. For the first time in ten years, I felt human again. And nobody touches what belongs in my house."
