Chapter 6 - The Golden Dawn

One year later.

The morning sun broke over the vast, sparkling blue horizon of Lake Michigan, casting a warm, golden glow across the private estate in suburban Lake Forest.

The old Bolaro mansion in downtown Chicago was gone—sold off and demolished after the complete collapse of the Moretti crime syndicate. Following the deaths of Carmine and Antonio Moretti, Lorenzo had used his vast fortune and absolute authority to systematically dismantle his family’s illegal operations, transitioning every asset into legitimate international shipping, real estate, and medical philanthropy.

On the manicured green lawn overlooking the lake, a grand white marquee tent was set up, decorated with thousands of white lilies and silver ribbons.

Upbeat jazz music floated through the warm summer breeze. Children laughed as they played near the fountain, while dozens of legitimate business leaders, local politicians, and former hospital staff gathered around champagne tables.

In the center of the lawn, a little boy in a tiny black tuxedo was toddling enthusiastically toward a golden retriever puppy.

"Nico! Slow down, buddy!" I called out, laughing as I walked across the grass in a stunning, floor-length white lace wedding dress that shimmered under the sunlight.

Nico, now a healthy, energetic twenty-month-old toddler with a mop of dark brown curls, turned around and giggled loudly, holding up a bright red apple he had managed to steal from the catering table.

"Look at him," a low, deep voice murmured behind me.

Warm hands wrapped gently around my waist, pulling me back against a broad, solid chest. I leaned my head back, looking up into the dark, handsome face of my husband, Lorenzo.

He wore a pristine black tuxedo, looking relaxed, peaceful, and entirely free of the dark shadows that had once consumed his life.

"He gets his thievery from his father," I teased, turning around in his arms and resting my hands against his lapels.

"I prefer to call it resourcefulness," Lorenzo chuckled, leaning down to press a soft, tender kiss against my lips. "And besides... the best thing I ever stole was you."

"You didn't steal me, Lorenzo Bolaro," I reminded him with a soft smile, reaching up to adjust his silk bowtie. "I charged you five million dollars."

Lorenzo laughed—a rich, joyful sound that echoed across the sunny lawn. He pulled me closer, his grey eyes shining with a deep, profound love that filled every corner of my soul.

"Best investment I ever made," Lorenzo whispered softly.

A few yards away, Marco—now wearing a tailored gray security suit—scooped Nico up onto his shoulders, letting the toddler wear his gold aviator sunglasses as the crowd cheered and raised their glasses in a toast.

I looked out over the bright, beautiful scene—at my healthy, laughing stepson, at the peaceful sanctuary we had built together, and at the strong, devoted man holding me in his arms.

The dark nights in the hospital, the poison in the bottle, and the terrifying shadows of the past were completely gone.

I laid my head against Lorenzo’s chest, listening to the steady, strong rhythm of his heartbeat, knowing with absolute certainty that we were finally, truly home.
