Chapter 2 - The Serpent in the House

By 1:30 a.m., the Bolaro mansion felt less like a luxury estate and more like a fortress under siege.

Heavy iron security gates locked down the perimeter. Armed guards in dark suits stood every ten feet along the grand hallways, their submachine guns slung across their chests. Outside, the autumn rain beat relentlessly against the high stained-glass windows.

In the nursery, I had completely flushed Nico’s system with pure water and sterile hydration mix, keeping a oxygen mask lightly over his small face. His temperature had finally dropped back down to a safe 98.6 degrees, and his soft, rhythmic breathing filled the quiet room.

The heavy wooden door opened, and Lorenzo stepped inside.

He had removed his suit jacket, rolling the sleeves of his black dress shirt up to his elbows. His hands were clean, but his face looked as though it had been carved out of granite. He walked silently to the side of the crib, looking down at his sleeping son.

"He’s stable," I whispered, adjusting the blanket around Nico’s chest. "The paralytic has cleared his system. He won't have another attack tonight."

Lorenzo didn't look up immediately. He reached out with one broad finger, gently brushing the soft brown curls on Nico’s head.

"Eleven nights," Lorenzo said, his voice raw. "For eleven nights, I sat in that chair and watched my boy choke on his own air. I cried, Maya. I begged God to take my life instead of his. And all the while... the poison was being brewed thirty feet away in my own kitchen."

"Did Elena talk?" I asked carefully.

Lorenzo turned to face me. The dark circles under his eyes spoke of months of exhaustion, but his gaze was sharp and focused. "Dr. Crane talked first. After Marco took three of his fingers, he confessed."

I swallowed hard, keeping my expression neutral. I was an ICU nurse, not a mobster, but I knew the world I had stepped into tonight was lethal.

"Crane was deep in gambling debt to the Moretti crime family in South Chicago," Lorenzo revealed, stepping toward the window and staring out into the dark, rainy grounds. "They owned his medical practice, his house, his license. They told him they would erase his debt and give him a million dollars in cash if he ensured my son died before his first birthday."

My blood ran cold. "The Morettis? They wanted to kill an eight-month-old baby?"

"If Nico dies, I have no legal heir," Lorenzo explained, his jaw tightening. "According to the charter of the Bolaro Commission, if I die or step down without a blood heir, sixty percent of my family’s territories in northern Illinois automatically revert to the syndicate... which is controlled by Don Carmine Moretti."

I looked at the innocent baby sleeping peacefully in the crib. "And Elena? How does she fit into this?"

Lorenzo’s fist clenched so hard his knuckles turned white. "Elena was sleeping with Carmine Moretti’s eldest son, Antonio. She believed that once Nico was gone and I was broken by grief, Antonio would marry her and take over my empire. She was hiding the Succinylcholine in her vanity mirror, mixing it into the formula bottles before handing them to the night staff."

A wave of nausea washed over me. "She sacrificed her own sister’s baby for money and power."

"She sacrificed my life," Lorenzo corrected quietly. He turned around, stepping close to me. His imposing height towered over me, but there was no threat in his posture—only a deep, terrifying sincerity. "You saved my son, Maya. You walked into this house four hours ago as a temp nurse, and you saw what twenty men and five private doctors missed."

"I just did my job," I said softly. "I pay attention to my patients."

"You did more than your job," Lorenzo insisted. He reached into his pocket and pulled out a heavy black leather folder, laying it on the table beside the medical monitors. "Inside that folder is a cashier's check for two million dollars. It's yours."

I stared at the folder, then looked up at him, shaking my head. "I can't take that."

"You can, and you will," Lorenzo said firmly. "But I have one more request."

I narrowed my eyes. "What request?"

Lorenzo looked back at Nico. "This isn't over. Carmine Moretti knows Crane failed tonight. When Elena doesn't return his calls, he will know his plan has been exposed. He will come for this house, Maya. He will come for my son."

Lorenzo stepped closer, his dark eyes locking onto mine with absolute vulnerability.

"I can protect this mansion with a hundred guns," Lorenzo murmured. "But I cannot protect his life if he gets sick again. I need a medical professional I can trust with my life. Stay here, Maya. Stay as Nico’s personal medical director. Name your price."

I looked down at tiny Nico, who let out a soft, contented sigh in his sleep, his little hand reaching out in the dark. I thought about my small, empty apartment in downtown Chicago, my mounting student loans, and the sterile hospital wards where administrators cared more about billing than patients.

Then I looked at Lorenzo Bolaro—a man the whole city feared, standing before me as a father ready to tear the world apart to keep his child safe.

"Five million," I said, my voice unwavering. "And I have absolute authority over Nico’s food, medicine, and environment. No one touches him without my permission. Not even your guards. Not even you."

A slow, rare smile broke across Lorenzo’s sharp features.

"Done," Lorenzo said, extending his broad hand. "Welcome to the family, Nurse Ellis."
