Chapter 5 - Standing Tall

All eyes turned toward the entrance.

At first, there was only emptiness. Then, a figure stepped through the threshold.

Luca Costello did not roll into the room.

Dressed in a bespoke charcoal tuxedo, his shoulders squared and his jaw set like carved granite, Luca walked through the double doors. He wore light, discreet carbon-fiber leg braces hidden beneath his trousers, and his hands gripped two polished mahogany forearm crutches. Every step was slow, deliberate, and soaked in an aura of terrifying, unstoppable authority.

The collective gasp in the room was deafening. Whispers erupted into sheer panic.

Victor Sterling dropped his notes, his face turning the color of wet chalk. He staggered back against the podium, staring at Luca as if he were seeing a ghost risen from the grave.

"No..." Sterling choked out, his voice trembling across the microphone. "That's... that's impossible. The medical reports—"

"Were falsified by you, Victor," Luca’s voice boomed across the ballroom, rich, deep, and carrying the absolute weight of a king reclaiming his throne.

Luca continued walking down the center aisle, each step a declaration of war won. Armed security guards—men loyal only to Luca—detonated their presence by stepping out from the shadows of the pillars, blocking every exit and locking down the ballroom's digital communications.

"For twelve years," Luca said, closing the distance toward the stage with agonizingly deliberate strength, "you believed you had buried me. You poisoned me, you stole my mobility, and you thought you could carve up my empire like a carcass."

Sterling backed away, shaking frantically. "You have no proof! You can't—"

"I have the chemical signature of the neurotoxin you purchased through a shell company in Zurich," Luca interrupted, stopping right at the base of the stage. He let go of one crutch for a fraction of a second, steadying himself on the podium, standing entirely on his own two feet for the first time in over a decade. "I have your financial records. And, most importantly, I have your confession recorded by the federal agents currently securing your estate."

Sterling lunged toward the side exit, but two guards intercepted him instantly, slamming him against the wall and clicking steel cuffs around his wrists. The room watched in stunned, breathless awe as the empire’s true master reclaimed his domain.

As Sterling was dragged out, screaming curses into the night, the heavy tension in the ballroom slowly dissolved into a trembling, respectful silence.

Luca turned away from the stage. Looking up toward the private balcony overlooking the grand hall, he caught sight of two figures standing by the railing.

Elena stood there, her hand over her mouth, tears streaming freely down her face as she witnessed the impossible. And beside her, jumping up and down with uncontainable joy, was Maya, clapping her hands and pointing down at him.

Dead things don't try.

Luca smiled—a true, brilliant smile that erased twelve years of darkness. He tossed his crutches aside, catching his balance with sheer, raw willpower, and raised his hand in a silent salute to his daughter.

The empire was back in the hands of its rightful ruler. And for the first time in a very long time, Luca Costello was ready to walk into the future.
