Chapter 3 - The Poisoned Empire

Two weeks later, the results arrived in a sealed, heavy manila envelope.
Luca sat alone in his study, the mahogany desk illuminated by a single brass lamp. His hands trembled slightly as he broke the seal. He read the report once, then twice, needing the second reading to confirm what his mind refused to process.
There was no vascular stroke in his medical history. No natural neurological decay.
Instead, the toxicological profile revealed a horrifying, calculated reality: a specialized, slow-acting neurotoxin had been systematically introduced into his system over a period of six months twelve years ago. It had targeted his lower spinal cord, shutting down nerve signal transmission and flawlessly mimicking permanent paralysis while keeping his upper body untouched.
His legs hadn't failed him. They had been silenced.
Someone inside his own inner circle—someone who stood to inherit his throne or usurp his empire—had poisoned him. Twelve years of wheelchair-bound isolation, twelve years of psychological torture, all engineered by a traitor.
As his blood boiled with cold, lethal fury, a second envelope caught his eye. It was the confidential paternity panel he had quietly requested after noticing subtle features in Maya and running a discreet DNA comparison against his own records.
Paternity probability: 99.9997 percent.
Luca stared at the paper, the world spinning. The summer he spent in a modest South Side apartment twelve years ago—before the betrayal, before the paralysis—flashed before his eyes. He had fallen in love with a woman named Elena, only to mysteriously collapse weeks later and be whisked away into medical isolation. He never knew she was pregnant. He never knew he had a daughter.
Slowly, methodically, Luca closed the folders. He pressed the intercom button on his desk.
"Elena," he said smoothly. "Come to the study. Now."
When Elena entered, she stood defensively by the door, expecting a reprimand or sudden termination. Instead, Luca slid the reports across the polished wood.
"Read them," he commanded softly.
Elena stepped forward, her eyes scanning the pages. As the realization of the poisoning washed over her, she covered her mouth in horror. Then, her eyes fell upon the second document. The color drained entirely from her face.
"The summer..." she whispered, her voice cracking. "I never knew your last name. You vanished."
"I was poisoned six weeks after I last saw you," Luca said, his voice laced with suppressed venom. "I woke up paralyzed. I lost years trying to survive. I never knew about you, Elena. And I never knew about Maya."

Tears welled in Elena's eyes, but she held her ground, her gaze burning with a fierce, protective maternal instinct. "She's going to want to know you. She already loves coming here."
"I am going to find the person who did this," Luca vowed, his eyes gleaming with cold steel. "And when I do, I will take back everything they stole from us."
