Chapter 5 - The Collapse of an Empire

Within seventy-two hours, the story of Wade Carrington’s dramatic downfall dominated local news and corporate headlines.

The self-proclaimed real estate tycoon was exposed as a penniless figurehead who had stolen from his wife’s trust to maintain a fake lifestyle. His mother, Lorraine, was forced to check into a cheap motel after being removed from the mansion by local law enforcement, surrounded by cardboard boxes of her clothes.

Brynn Hollowell attempted to flee the state, but her bank accounts were frozen as part of the criminal investigation into the $400,000 corporate wire transfer. She was stripped of her marketing license and faced pending felony accessory charges.

In court two weeks later, Wade sat in an orange jumpsuit at the defense table. His hair was disheveled, and the arrogance that had defined him for four years was entirely gone.

Celeste sat at the plaintiff’s desk, flanked by Charlotte’s top family law attorneys and legal strategists. She looked radiant, fully recovered from her surgery, holding a legal folder containing full custody paperwork.

“Your Honor,” Wade’s court-appointed public defender argued desperately, “my client admits to financial mismanagement, but he is requesting joint legal custody of his daughter, Ivy Carrington, and spousal support while he resolves his legal issues.”

Celeste’s lead attorney stood up smoothly.

“Your Honor, we present Exhibit A: medical logs from Charlotte General Hospital proving that Mr. Carrington failed to visit his wife during an emergency C-section and life-threatening surgical recovery. Exhibit B: security footage showing Mr. Carrington bringing a mistress into the marital residence while his wife was hospitalized. Exhibit C: evidence that Mr. Carrington attempted to render his wife and newborn child homeless five days after major surgery.”

The judge flipped through the documents, her eyes growing colder with every page.

“In addition,” the attorney added, “Mr. Carrington is currently awaiting trial on three counts of grand larceny and fraud. He has no income, no legal residence, and a demonstrated history of emotional and physical neglect.”

The judge slammed her gavel down with a sharp crack.

“Custody request denied,” the judge ruled firmly. “Celeste Marlowe is granted sole legal and physical custody of Ivy. Mr. Carrington’s parental rights are suspended pending psychological evaluation and completion of any criminal sentence. Spousal support is denied based on the enforceable premarital agreement.”

Wade collapsed into his chair, burying his face in his hands as tears finally streamed down his face. He had lost his freedom, his luxury, his pride, and his family—all because he believed his own lies.

Outside the courtroom, Lorraine intercepted Celeste as she walked toward the exit. The older woman looked haggard, her designer dress wrinkled and unwashed.

“Celeste! Please!” Lorraine begged, grabbing at Celeste’s coat. “I’m Ivy’s grandmother! You can’t leave us with nothing! Wade made a mistake, but we are family!”

Celeste stopped and slowly turned to face the woman who had left her to suffer during labor.

“Family?” Celeste asked softly. “When I was crying in pain five days after surgery, you told me I should be grateful Wade let me live in my own house. You told me childbirth was nothing.”

“I was wrong!” Lorraine wept. “I’m sorry! Just give us enough to pay for a small apartment!”

“You claimed women have handled hardships for centuries, Lorraine,” Celeste said, her voice completely devoid of pity. “I suggest you start handling yours.”

Without looking back, Celeste stepped past her into the bright afternoon sun.
