Chapter 2 - The Cold Awakening

While Wade and Brynn popped a bottle of vintage Dom Pérignon inside the master bedroom, celebrating what they believed was a seamless transition of power, Celeste was picked up at the end of the long driveway by a black armored sedan.
Inside sat Arthur Vance, the senior managing partner of Marlowe Global Holdings—a multi-billion-dollar private equity firm established by Celeste’s late father. Beside him was Dr. Elena Rostova, a private obstetrician retained by the Marlowe estate.
Within twenty minutes, Celeste and Ivy were settled into the penthouse suite of the private Marlowe Medical Pavilion in downtown Charlotte. A team of nurses immediately attended to Celeste’s medical needs, dressing her incision, providing proper physical therapy, and ensuring Ivy received world-class newborn care.
“Your husband—or rather, Mr. Carrington—has made quite a few structural mistakes,” Arthur said, opening a leather dossier as Celeste rested on the plush bed. “When you married him four years ago, you placed the mansion, his luxury vehicles, and 85% of Sterling Development into the Marlowe Family Trust under a confidential revocable lease agreement.”
“Which allowed him to act as the managing face while I quietly funded every expansion,” Celeste noted, nursing Ivy gently.
“Precisely,” Arthur smiled thin-lippedly. “He believed the corporate filings were merely legal fluff to protect him from tax liabilities. In reality, he owns exactly 0% of the physical real estate and holds his executive position strictly at the pleasure of Marlowe Global’s board of trustees.”
“And his personal spending?”
“He’s been using company expense accounts to pay for Miss Hollowell’s luxury apartment, her corporate stipends, and his mother’s lavish lifestyle,” Arthur replied. “In fact, three days ago—while you were in emergency surgery—Mr. Carrington transferred $400,000 from the company’s reserve fund into a private account registered under Brynn Hollowell’s name.”
Celeste’s eyes narrowed. “Embezzlement.”
“Textbook,” Arthur confirmed. “We can freeze every line of credit attached to his name by midnight. By morning, his corporate credit card will be declined, his personal accounts will be under audit, and the repo team will be dispatched for the Mercedes.”
“No,” Celeste said softly, a cold smile touching her lips. “Don’t do it at midnight. Wait until tomorrow afternoon.”
“Why?”
“Because tomorrow at two o’clock, Wade is hosting the annual Investors Gala at the Grand Harbor Club,” Celeste said, looking down at her daughter’s quiet face. “He invited the city’s top developers to announce his ‘groundbreaking’ new commercial project—a project that was designed entirely by my team. He wants to show off Brynn as his new chief consultant.”
Arthur chuckled softly. “Consider it done, Miss Marlowe. The repossession and asset freeze will execute precisely at 2:15 PM.”
Meanwhile, back at the mansion, Wade Carrington was pouring another glass of champagne for Brynn. Lorraine sat in the velvet armchair, sipping wine and grinning.
“I always knew that girl was beneath us,” Lorraine declared, waving her hand dismissively. “No real background, no family wealth, just a quiet mouse who got lucky. You did the right thing, Wade. Brynn has style. She looks like she belongs in this family.”
“To our future,” Wade toasted, clinking his glass against Brynn’s. “Tomorrow at the gala, we finalize the twenty-million-dollar expansion deal with the Vantage Group. Once that contract is signed, Sterling Development goes public, and we’ll be untouchable.”
“And Celeste?” Brynn asked coyly, wrapping her arms around his neck. “What if she tries to come back for her things?”
May you like
“She won’t,” Wade snorted. “Where would she go? She doesn't have a dime that didn't come from my allowance. She’ll crawl back in a week, begging for child support, and I’ll give her just enough to keep her quiet.”
He had no idea that every penny he had ever spent, every room he had ever slept in, and every deal he had ever signed was held by a thread—and Celeste was about to cut it.
