Chapter 6 - The Long Table

Two years later.

The golden light of a midsummer evening streamed through the tall arched windows of the Evanston estate, casting long, warm shadows across the expansive dining room.

The room had changed dramatically over the last twenty-four months.

The cold, sterile marble floors were now covered by plush, comfortable Persian rugs. The pristine, untouched display shelves were filled with framed photographs—Lucy’s first day of kindergarten, family trips to the North Woods, and a hilarious picture of Adrian wearing a giant foam dinosaur hat at a theme park.

In the center of the room stood a grand wooden table built for sixteen people.

Except tonight, it wasn't empty.

Sitting along the sides were Maya’s extended family—her mother, her younger sister, and close friends from the local community—alongside several of Adrian’s trusted engineers and estate staff. Laughter, chatter, and the cheerful clinking of glasses filled the air.

At the far end of the table sat six-year-old Lucy, wearing a pretty blue dress, enthusiastically explaining to an attentive senior software developer why the Diplodocus was objectively superior to the Brachiosaurus.

At the head of the table sat Adrian.

He sat with his hearing aids turned on, soaking in every sound—the laughter, the chatter, the clatter of silverware, the warm, vibrant symphony of a life fully lived.

Maya stepped up behind his chair, sliding her hands gently over his broad shoulders. He reached up, covering her soft hand with his own, turning his head to look up at his wife.

They had been married six months ago in a quiet, beautiful ceremony in the estate’s rose garden, surrounded by the few people who truly mattered.

“Are you getting overwhelmed by the noise?” Maya asked, speaking slowly and clearly so he could read her mouth even in the bustling room. “We can go outside if you need quiet.”

Adrian looked up at her—at her radiant smile, her warm brown eyes, and the deep, unconditional love that had saved him from a lifetime of solitary darkness.

He looked down the long table at their daughter, who was currently trying to feed a small piece of garlic bread to a stuffed T-rex.

“No,” Adrian said, his voice rich with profound happiness as he pulled Maya down for a soft, tender kiss. “This is the only sound I ever want to hear.”

Lucy looked up from her plate, saw them kissing, and immediately made a loud, dramatic face.

“Eww! Mommy and Daddy are being mushy again!” Lucy announced to the entire table.

The room erupted into collective laughter.

Adrian didn't turn off his hearing aids. He leaned back in his chair, held his wife’s hand tightly, and smiled as he enjoyed his dinner in a house that would never, ever be silent again.
