Chapter 4 - The Sound of Betrayal

The storm that hit Chicago that night matched the fury brewing inside Mercer Logistics.

Rain hammered against the reinforced glass windows of the sixty-story Mercer Tower in downtown Chicago. At 11:00 PM, the corporate headquarters was nearly deserted, save for night security and the low hum of the central server room on the fifty-fifth floor.

The private elevator doors slid open quietly.

Adrian walked out, wearing a dark tailored coat, his face set in stone. Beside him walked Maya, carrying a secure digital diagnostic scanner that Adrian’s chief engineer had prepared thirty minutes earlier.

Maya had insisted on coming. When Adrian tried to tell her to stay at the estate with the babysitter, she had looked him dead in the eye and said, “You need someone who can listen to the hallway while you handle the code.”

They moved silently down the dimly lit executive corridor toward the central server hub.

The heavy steel door to the main server room was ajar. A thin strip of light spilled out onto the dark carpet.

Adrian motioned for Maya to stay behind a decorative marble pillar. He stepped carefully toward the door, adjusting his hearing aids to maximum sensitivity. The metallic roar of cooling fans instantly filled his ears like a mechanical hurricane, but above the noise, he saw two figures standing near the master terminal console.

Julian Mercer was there, plugging a high-speed external drive into the core mainframe. Beside him stood Arthur Pendelton—Mercer Logistics’ chief legal counsel and a member of the board of directors.

“How much longer, Julian?” Pendelton asked nervously, checking his gold watch. “If Adrian’s automated security protocols pick up the transfer, his emergency lockout will trigger globally.”

“Relax, Arthur,” Julian chuckled, watching the blue progress bar on the screen reach 78%. “Adrian is up at his Evanston estate playing house with his maid and her kid. He doesn't monitor the manual server overrides at night. The man is practically deaf to his own company.”

Julian leaned against the console, laughing. “By tomorrow morning, this code will be in the hands of Apex Global. We’ll trigger a massive stock drop, blame Adrian’s incompetent oversight, and the board will vote him out by noon. I’ll be CEO before the end of the week.”

Behind the pillar, Maya felt her blood boil. She gripped her phone, recording every single word on high-definition video, capturing Julian’s face, his voice, and the glowing terminal screen showing the illegal file transfer.

Inside the server room, the progress bar reached 95%.

“Almost done,” Julian smirked.

Suddenly, the overhead fluorescent lights in the server room turned blood-red.

A deafening, high-pitched security alarm erupted throughout the fifty-fifth floor, spinning red emergency lights flashing against the glass walls.

Julian jumped back in shock. “What the hell?! What did you touch, Arthur?!”

“I didn't touch anything!” Pendelton yelled over the siren.

The heavy glass doors of the server room slid open automatically.

Adrian Mercer stepped through the threshold.

He didn't flinch at the blaring red lights or the piercing sirens—in fact, he reached up with a calm, deliberate motion, turned off his hearing aids, and dropped the world into absolute, silent stillness.

In the silence, Adrian walked toward his half-brother like an executioner.

Julian scrambled to pull the external drive out of the terminal, but Adrian reached out with lightning speed, grabbing Julian’s wrist in a vise-like grip and slamming him back against the server rack.

“Adrian!” Julian gasped, his eyes wide with sudden terror as he struggled against his brother’s immense strength. “Let go of me! You don't know what you’re doing!”

Adrian didn't say a word. He didn't need to yell over alarms he couldn't hear.

He simply used his free hand to yank the illegal external drive from the port, slipped it into his coat pocket, and then looked Julian dead in the eye.

Maya stepped into the room, holding her phone up high, showing the live recording that was already being transmitted directly to the Chicago Police Department and the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

“He knows exactly what he’s doing, Julian,” Maya said, her voice clear and strong despite the chaos. “And the FBI is already in the lobby.”
