Chapter 6 - The Maid and the Empire

By four o'clock that afternoon, St. Catherine’s Hospital had become a fortress.
Four armed state police officers stood outside Room 904. The entire ninth floor was shut down to visitors. Down on the street, news helicopters hovered overhead, their cameras zoomed in on the glass windows of the hospital, broadcasting the sudden, miraculous awakening of Julian Cross across every major news network in the world.
Inside the room, the atmosphere was quiet, subdued, and tense.
Julian sat propped up at a forty-five-degree angle. He had been cleared to drink water, though his throat was still red and raw. An IV line ran into his left wrist, pumping high-dose vitamins and anti-inflammatories into his system.
Nora sat on a small vinyl chair near the corner of the room. Maisie had fallen asleep on her lap, exhausted by the chaotic energy of the day, her small thumb tucked into her mouth.
Nora felt entirely out of place. The storm had broken around her, but she was still just the woman who cleaned his floors.
"Nora."
Julian’s voice was quiet, stripped of the harsh anger he had unleashed on Miles.
Nora looked up quickly. "Yes, Mr. Cross?"
Julian stared at her for a moment, his dark gray eyes studying her tired face, the worn coat wrapped around her shoulders, and the sleeping child in her arms.
"Why are you still here?" he asked softly.
Nora blinked. "I... Eleanor sent me with the legal files this morning. And then... everything happened. Ms. Shaw asked me to stay until the police finished taking initial statements about who entered the room."
Julian was silent for a long moment. He looked down at his right hand—the hand that had twitched when Maisie held his thumb.
"The doctors said..." Julian began, his voice raspy, struggling with the emotional weight of the words. "They said I was gone. They were going to transfer me to a facility tomorrow. They said my brain wasn't responding."
"They were wrong," Nora said gently.
Julian shook his head slightly. "They weren't wrong. I was... stuck. It was like being underwater under ten feet of ice. I could hear noises... hums... but I couldn't find the surface. I couldn't find my way up."
He looked up, his eyes locking onto Nora with an intensity that made her breath catch.
"Then I heard a voice," Julian whispered. "A little girl's voice. She said... 'Don't be afraid. I'm here.'"
He looked down at Maisie’s small, sleeping form.
"That was the ice breaking," Julian said, his voice thick with uncharacteristic emotion. "That was the first thing that made sense in eleven days."
Nora felt tears prick the corners of her eyes. She pulled Maisie a little closer, kissing the top of her soft, dark head. "She likes you, Mr. Cross. Even when you were angry and distant. She always said you just needed more colors."
A tiny, almost invisible smile touched the corner of Julian’s pale lips—the first real smile Nora had ever seen on his face.
"She was right," Julian said softly.
The door swung open, and Rebecca Shaw stepped inside, holding a secure tablet. Her face was grim, her mouth set in a hard, professional line.
"Julian," Rebecca said, walking to the foot of the bed. "The police have just arrested Paul Givens' brother."
Julian’s eyes narrowed. "The driver of the truck that hit me?"
"Yes," Rebecca replied. "It turns out Paul Givens didn't die of weather-related swerving. His vehicle was paid for through an offshore shell company registered in the Cayman Islands. The wire transfers were traced thirty minutes ago by the FBI's financial crimes unit. The source account belongs to a sub-entity owned entirely by Miles Harrow."
Nora gasped, covering her mouth with her hand.
It wasn't just a reckless driver. It was a hired execution.
Julian didn't look surprised. His eyes simply grew darker, colder—the brilliant, terrifying strategist returning to full strength.
"Where is Miles now?" Julian asked, his voice dropping into an icy register.
"He tried to board a private jet at Teterboro Airport an hour ago," Rebecca said. "Federal marshals intercepted him on the tarmac. He’s currently in federal custody without bail."
Rebecca paused, glancing at Nora, then back to Julian. "The board is calling an emergency session for tomorrow morning at nine. They want you on video link. They want to restore your full authority as CEO."
Julian didn't answer immediately. He looked past Rebecca, looking out the window at the Manhattan skyline glowing in the twilight rain.

For six years, he had built that company. He had traded his sleep, his health, his peace of mind, and his humanity to build a mountain of wealth, only for the man he trusted most to try to bury him under it.
"Tell the board I'll be on the call," Julian said slowly. "And tell them... that changes are coming."
