Chapter 5 - The Whisper Spreads

The quiet in Room 904 was louder than an explosion.
Dr. Thorne stared at Julian, his light pen hanging loose in his fingers. The nurses looked at one another, their faces pale, frozen in absolute shock.
"Did he... did he just say what I think he said?" a young nurse whispered, her hands trembling over the chart.
"Get the chief of hospital security in here," Dr. Thorne commanded, his voice suddenly dropping into a stern, terrifying register. "Right now. And lock these doors."
"No!"
The voice came from the lounge entrance.
Miles Harrow pushed through the heavy glass doors, flanked by two larger men in dark suits. His tie was slightly crooked, his hair no longer perfect. His eyes swept over the room, taking in the scene: the flashing monitors, the fully conscious Julian Cross sitting propped up on his pillows, and Nora standing near the bed with her child.
"Miles," Julian rasped, his eyes turning to fire as he glared across the room at his oldest friend.
Miles stopped dead in his tracks. For three long seconds, the man who held the keys to a fifty-billion-dollar empire looked like a cornered animal.
"Julian," Miles said, his voice cracking slightly before he forced it back into a smooth, comforting tone. "My God... you're awake. It’s a miracle."
He took a step forward, his hand reaching out as if to touch Julian’s arm. "Doctors, thank God. We need to secure him immediately. My team will take over from here—"
"Don't... touch... me," Julian growled, his voice stronger now, forged in pure, icy hatred. "Get... him... out."
Rebecca Shaw, the attorney, pushed her way past Miles’s guards, stepping directly between Miles and Julian’s bed. She pulled a folded legal document from her jacket and held it right against Miles’s chest.
"You are officially revoked, Miles," Rebecca said, her voice dropping into a razor-thin growl. "Julian is conscious. His capacity is established. Under his personal directive, your access to his person and his medical decisions is terminated as of five seconds ago."
Miles’s jaw tightened. A dark, ugly vein pulsed along his temple. "Rebecca, don't be stupid. The man is delirious. He just woke up from a eleven-day coma! He doesn't know what he's saying!"
"I know... who... hit... my car," Julian said, his head resting back against the white pillows, but his gaze never leaving Miles. "It was... a black SUV. Stamford... exit. It... pushed... the truck into me."
Julian took a heavy, painful breath, his fingers gripping the bedsheet until his knuckles were white.
"You... called me... five minutes before," Julian continued, every word deliberate, clear, cut from ice. "You asked... if I was on Route 15. You wanted... to know... where I was."
The room was suffocating.
Miles looked around. He saw the nurses watching him. He saw Dr. Thorne reaching for the wall-mounted emergency phone to call the New York Police Department. He saw Nora Bennett holding her daughter, her eyes wide with horrified realization.
Miles took a slow step back, his hands raised in a fake gesture of peace.
"This is insane," Miles murmured, though his voice lacked conviction now. "He’s confused. The brain trauma..."
"Leave, Miles," Rebecca Shaw ordered, her voice echoing off the glass walls. "Before the police arrive to escort you out in handcuffs."

Miles stared at Julian for one long, terrifying moment. The silence between the two men who had built an empire together was heavier than lead.
Then, without another word, Miles turned on his heel and rushed out of the room, his two guards trailing quickly behind him.
