Chapter 3 - The Price of Treason

The next three weeks were a masterclass in public execution.
The story of the prominent Charlotte billionaire who kicked out his eight-months-pregnant wife to move his glittering mistress into the family mansion went viral across Facebook and local news outlets. Public sympathy was overwhelmingly behind Mara. Images of her, calm and dignified despite her heavily pregnant state, contrasted sharply with leaked paparazzi photos of Tessa screaming at reporters outside a local luxury boutique that had refused her service due to a maxed-out card.
Deprived of his cash flow and corporate credits, Grant’s empire began to implode from within. The Vanguard Group officially pulled out of the merger, releasing a public statement that they would not partner with a firm undergoing criminal forensic analysis. The stock value of Ellison Holdings cratered by sixty percent in less than twenty days.
Inside the un-monitored, chaotic Ellison estate, the luxury had vanished. The cleaning staff, chefs, and security guards had all walked out after their checks bounced twice.
Grant stood in the kitchen, surrounded by unwashed dishes and empty takeout boxes. His tie was undone, his hair disheveled, looking ten years older.
Tessa walked into the room, dragging two massive designer suitcases. She was no longer wearing her tight glittering dresses; she was in a simple tracksuit, her platinum hair messy, looking furious.
"Where do you think you're going?" Grant demanded, his voice hollow.
"I'm leaving, Grant," Tessa hissed, spitting the words out. "I didn't sign up for this! You told me you were a billionaire! You told me your wife was a nobody who would beg to stay! Now I can't even walk down the street without people filming me and calling me a homewrecker! My agent dropped me, and my bank accounts are flagged because of your stupid shell companies!"
"I gave you everything!" Grant shouted, stepping toward her, his face turning an angry purple. "I bought you that diamond bracelet! I let you live in this mansion!"
"Yeah, and now the bank is foreclosing on this mansion next month!" Tessa yelled back, her voice shrill. "You're pathetic, Grant. Your wife was the one who actually had the brains, and you were too stupid to see it. Enjoy your bankruptcy!"

She didn't wait for his reply. She kicked the kitchen door open and wheeled her suitcases out into the driveway, leaving Grant completely alone in the echoing, empty house.
Grant fell to his knees on the dirty Italian marble floor. For the first time in his life, the absolute reality of his complete isolation crashed down on him. He had no friends, no allies, no wealth left to buy loyalty. He had traded a brilliant, devoted wife for a shallow illusion, and now the illusion had walked out the door.
