Chapter 2 - The Default Notice

By 8:00 AM Monday morning, Grant’s world began to unravel.
He was standing in the center of the glass-walled boardroom at Ellison Holdings, screaming at his chief financial officer. "What do you mean the Vanguard Group put the merger on a temporary freeze? The contracts were supposed to be signed at noon today!"
The CFO, a pale man named Richard, looked terrified. "Grant, it’s not just a freeze. Someone leaked an anonymous 400-page risk-analysis dossier to the Vanguard compliance board at midnight. It outlines every single shell company we used to mask our Q3 losses. It’s mathematically flawless, Grant. Whoever wrote it knows our internal infrastructure better than we do."
Before Grant could respond, the heavy mahogany doors of the boardroom swung open.
Natalie Brooks walked in, dressed in a flawless charcoal power suit. Behind her walked two court couriers carrying thick stacks of legal documents.
"What the hell is the meaning of this?" Grant roared, glaring at Natalie. "Where is my wife? Tell Mara to get her pathetic face over here right now before I ensure she gets absolutely zero custody of my children!"
Natalie didn't flinch. She calmly signaled the couriers, who dropped the heavy stacks of papers directly in front of Grant.
"Mr. Ellison, you have been formally served," Natalie said, her voice echoing with a chilling professional authority. "My client, Mara Ellison, has filed for an expedited divorce on the grounds of extreme emotional abuse, marital misconduct, and financial dissipation. We have also filed an emergency injunction."
Grant let out a harsh, barking laugh. "An injunction? For what? She doesn't own this company! She signed a prenuptial agreement!"
"Ah, yes. The prenuptial agreement," Natalie smiled, a predatory expression that made Richard the CFO step back. "The one that states she waives her rights to your corporate assets unless you engage in actions that willfully endanger the financial security of the household. Bringing a third party to live in the marital home while cutting off your heavily pregnant wife's medical insurance and access to basic funds fits the legal definition of malicious endangerment perfectly."
Natalie leaned across the table, looking directly into Grant's furious eyes. "Furthermore, the court has granted an immediate freeze on all your personal and corporate bank accounts pending a full forensic audit. As of five minutes ago, Grant, your personal credit lines are dead. You cannot move a single dollar."
Grant’s phone began to vibrate violently on the table. He looked down. It was his mother, Judith. He clicked speakerphone, his hand trembling.
"Grant! What is happening?!" Judith screamed hysterically. "I just tried to use my black card at the boutique and it was declined! The estate manager says the staff payroll bounced! There are news trucks parked outside the front gate! They are saying you are being investigated for fraud!"

Grant stared at the phone, the air completely leaving his lungs. He looked up at Natalie, his jaw trembling. "Mara... Mara did this?"
"No, Grant," Natalie said softly as she packed her briefcase. "You did this when you mistook her patience for weakness. Have a miserable Monday."
