Chapter 7 - THE POLICE RAIDBright tactical flashlights flooded the dark basement room, blinding everyone with piercing white beams.

"Federal agents! Drop your weapons! Drop them now!"

The deep, booming shouts echoed off the stone walls as half a dozen armed state police officers swarmed into the archive, their assault rifles raised and locked onto Victor and Thomas.

Victor froze, the silenced pistol slipping from his fingers and clattering loudly against the concrete floor. Thomas raised his hands instantly, dropping his weapon before the officers even had to scream a second time.

"Don't move! On the ground! Hands behind your back!"

Two officers slammed Victor face-first onto the damp floor, slapping heavy steel handcuffs onto his wrists with practiced efficiency. Another pair tackled Thomas, pinning him beside a rack of old ledger books.

Marco curled into a fetal position, sobbing hysterically as an officer yanked him up by his designer lapels.

Stepping through the wall of armed officers came Captain Miller of the State Police, accompanied by a familiar figure holding a heavy leather briefcase.

Elena.

Except she wasn't wearing a maid's uniform anymore. Underneath her dark trench coat, she wore the sharp insignia of a senior federal financial crimes investigator.

"Good evening, Mr. Moretti," Elena said calmly, walking past the struggling officers to stand beside me. She glanced at the vintage monitor, where the grainy footage of Alessandra was still looping.

I stared at her, stunned. "You... you aren't a domestic worker."

"My real name is Agent Elena Vance, special assignment," she replied, pulling a badge from her pocket and flashing it briefly. "We've been tracking Victor Hale and the Moretti corporate offshore network for three years. But we couldn't touch them without concrete proof of the original conspiracy—the asset forgery and the murder of your sister."

I looked down at the battered VHS tape still sitting inside the VCR. "And little Sophie?"

Elena smiled softly, a genuine warmth touching her eyes. "Sophie is my daughter. She played her part brilliantly, didn't she? We knew Marco and Victor monitored the main household security feeds 24/7. The only place they couldn't see was the old servant quarters where I was stationed undercover. We needed a distraction to get you down here, and we needed you to see the tape with your own eyes before they could silence you."

"You used my private family dinner as bait," I said, a dry, humorless chuckle escaping my lips.

"We used your intelligence, Mr. Moretti," Elena corrected gently. "You were the only one in that house sharp enough to put the pieces together once the spark was lit."

Over on the floor, Victor was being hauled to his feet by two officers. His face was twisted in rage and pure hatred as he glared directly at me.

"You think you've won, Luca?!" Victor screamed as they dragged him toward the exit. "Without us, your entire empire collapses by morning! The board is ours! The accounts are encrypted! You'll be bankrupt in a week!"

"Let him rant," Captain Miller said, pushing Victor out into the corridor.

As the heavy iron door slammed shut on the commotion, the underground archive fell quiet again, save for the soft mechanical hum of the VCR.

I walked over, pressed the eject button, and caught the battered blue-labeled tape as it slid out into my hand.

I thought it was over. I thought justice had finally arrived.

Then, as the tape slid completely out of the machine, I noticed something written on the inner plastic rim—a fourth line of handwriting that hadn't been visible until the cassette was fully ejected.

My breath caught in my throat.
