Chapter 6 - SUNRISE ON SUTTON PLACE

Three days later, the headline on the front page of the Chicago Tribune business section read: TECH EMPIRE CRUMBLES: APEX GLOBAL SCANDAL IMPLICATES BROOKS ENTERPRISES IN MULTI-MILLION-DOLLAR FRAUD.
Inside the penthouse suite of the Peninsula Hotel, the room was bathed in the soft, golden light of a crisp autumn morning.
Mia sat in a plush velvet armchair by the window, cradling her sleeping daughter against her chest. The baby wore a soft pink cotton onesie, her tiny fingers curled peacefully against Mia’s collarbone. The nightmares of the past, the sterile smell of the old hospital rooms, the cruelty of Adrian’s insults—all of it felt like a lifetime ago, washed away by the tide of absolute justice.
A soft knock sounded at the door.
Sarah, the neonatal nurse, opened it quietly and stepped into the room, holding a silver tray with a steaming cup of Earl Grey tea.
“How is she sleeping?” Sarah whispered, setting the tray on the side table.
“Like an angel,” Mia replied softly, pressing a gentle kiss to her daughter’s dark hair. “Has there been any word from the federal receiver?”
“Yes,” Sarah smiled, her eyes crinkling with warmth. “The court approved the emergency asset freeze yesterday afternoon. Adrian Brooks’s bank accounts have been entirely locked pending trial. Apex Global’s board of directors has already ousted him as CEO, and Celeste is currently holed up in a private recovery ward under federal guard after trying to check herself into a psychiatric facility to avoid questioning.”
Mia took a slow sip of her tea, letting the warm liquid soothe her throat.
She looked down at the infant resting in her arms. The baby let out a tiny, contented sigh, shifting slightly against Mia’s chest.
“He called my lawyer's office yesterday,” Mia said quietly. “Begged for a conversation. Said we could ‘work things out like civilized people.’”
“And what did your lawyer say?” Sarah asked.
Mia smiled, her gaze shifting out the expansive window toward the glittering expanse of Lake Michigan, where the sun was rising high into a clear, boundless blue sky.
“My lawyer told him that the only communication he’ll be receiving from now on is through a federal prosecutor.”
Mia gently stroked her daughter’s cheek, feeling the steady, strong heartbeat of the little girl who had given her the strength to conquer the world.
“You see, my sweet girl,” Mia whispered softly, pressing her cheek against the infant's soft hair. “Your father thought he was inviting us to witness his greatest triumph. He had no idea we were the storm.”

The baby stirred, her tiny green eyes fluttering open for a brief second, catching the morning light before drifting back into peaceful, untroubled sleep.
Mia smiled, secured her daughter safely in her arms, and turned away from the window to embrace a future that was entirely, beautifully, and unconditionally her own.
