Chapter 4 - THE COLLAPSE OF THE HOUSE OF CARDS

The silence that followed Mia’s words was not the polite hush of a formal gathering; it was the suffocating stillness of a lightning strike before the thunder hits.
For three seconds, nobody breathed.
Then, Adrian let out a sharp, incredulous bark of laughter, though his face was turning a mottled, furious shade of red. “Are you completely insane? Have you finally lost your mind from grief? Dragging Celeste into your pathetic delusions—”
“Delusions?” Mia interrupted smoothly.
She reached into her designer handbag, pulled out the heavy leather folder, and extracted a single, crisp document enclosed in a transparent plastic sleeve. She held it up between two fingers, letting the morning light catch the official raised gold seal of the Illinois Department of Public Health and Vital Statistics.
“I had our legal separation finalized eight months ago, Adrian,” Mia said, her voice ringing clear and steady across the ballroom. “You assumed that the moment you walked out the door, my life ended. You assumed I spent my nights crying into a pillow instead of doing what any smart, betrayed woman does when she realizes her husband is a corporate thief and a serial liar.”
Celeste’s face turned the color of chalk. The artificial glow of her spray tan suddenly looked sickly against her stark-white skin. She grabbed Adrian’s sleeve, her voice trembling. “Adrian... make her stop. She’s... she’s making a scene. Throw her out!”
“Shut up, Celeste,” Adrian muttered, his eyes locked onto the document in Mia’s hand. He turned back to Mia, his voice dropping into a dangerous hiss. “What is that? What kind of forged garbage are you waving around?”
“It’s not forged, Adrian. It’s science,” Mia replied calmly.
She stepped up the first step of the dais, standing just inches from the man who had tormented her for years.
“Eight months ago—three days before our divorce was officially signed by the judge—I discovered I was pregnant,” Mia said, her voice dropping into a mesmerizing whisper that carried to the front row. “Naturally, I didn't tell you. Why would I? You were already packing your bags to move your mistress into our penthouse. I wasn't about to let my child grow up in a toxic swamp of adultery and gaslighting.”
Adrian stepped back, shaking his head frantically. “Lies! That’s a biological impossibility! You couldn't carry a pregnancy to term—every specialist we saw said—”
“Every specialist you paid to diagnose me said what you wanted them to say, Adrian,” Mia corrected sharply. “The truth was, my miscarriages weren't my body failing me. They were the result of chronic, low-dose hormonal disruptors found in the imported specialty teas that your loving assistant Celeste thoughtfully brewed for me every single morning during our third year of marriage.”
Gasps erupted from the audience. Several high-society women clutched their pearls, turning to stare wide-eyed at Celeste.
Celeste’s knees buckled slightly. “That’s... that’s a monstrous lie! You have no proof! You’re framing us!”
“Am I?” Mia asked sweetly.
She pulled a second set of documents from the folder—printed email chains, bank statements, and signed digital affidavits.
“Here are the credit card statements showing Celeste purchasing organic foxglove extract online—the exact botanical compound known to induce uterine contractions in high concentrations. And here are the emails between you and your crooked pharmacist friend in Evanston, arranging the purchase.”
Adrian snatched the papers from Mia’s hand, his eyes scanning the lines of text. As he read, the color completely drained from his face. The invincible tech billionaire, the man who had bullied boards of directors and crushed competitors, looked like a man who had just been struck by a freight train.
“And as for your child, Celeste?” Mia turned her gaze directly to the trembling bride. “You thought you trapped a billionaire by passing off your pregnancy as Adrian’s. But basic genetics—and a routine prenatal paternity screening cross-referenced with Adrian’s DNA profile from his annual executive physical—tells a very different story.”
Mia held up the final sheet of paper.

“The biological father of Celeste’s child isn't Adrian Brooks,” Mia announced clearly. “It’s Marcus Vance—Celeste’s long-term personal trainer and, coincidentally, the cousin of the very logistics executive helping you launder money through Apex Global.”
The ballroom erupted into absolute, unbridled chaos.
