Chapter 6 - The Golden Hour

Three years later, the sun was setting over the white cliffs of Dover.
The wind was cool and fresh, carrying the scent of salt water and blooming wildflowers. I stood on the deck of our new seaside cottage, watching Madison chase a golden retriever puppy across the grass.
"Mom! Look!" Madison yelled, pointing to a massive passenger plane flying high in the blue sky. "That one is going to Tokyo! I know it!"
"Maybe, sweetie," I laughed, wrapping a warm woolen cardigan tighter around myself.
Connor walked out of the kitchen, carrying a tray of lemonade. At fifteen, he was already taller than me, his shoulders broad and his eyes bright with the confidence of a young man who knew he was loved, supported, and safe. He had just been signed to the Chelsea under-17 academy team, and his future was limitless.
"A toast," William said, stepping out onto the deck and raising his glass. "To the strongest woman I know. To Sarah."
"To Mom!" Connor and Madison cheered, clinking their glasses together.
I looked at my family—my real family.
I had once believed that my life ended the moment my marriage did. I had believed Bradley’s words when he told me I was nothing without his name, his money, and his approval.
But as the golden sun dipped below the horizon, casting a warm, beautiful light over our home, I knew the truth.
