Chapter 5 - The Confrontation

The house erupted into pure chaos.
Relative after relative drifted in from the backyard, staring through the hallway in absolute shock as police officers filled the living room.
"Adam! Tell them to leave!" Brooke screamed from the top of the landing, backing away as Officer Davis approached her. "Your crazy mother called the cops on us! She's trying to take Maisie away!"
"Brooke, calm down!" Adam shouted, taking the stairs two at a time. "Officer, please! There must be a misunderstanding!"
"There is no misunderstanding, Adam!" I roared, standing at the base of the stairs, pointing my finger directly at Brooke. "Show them the master bathroom! Show them the drain cleaner and the spoon! Show them her desk!"
The CPS caseworker, accompanied by a second officer, sprinted up the stairs past Brooke and pushed open the door to Maisie's bedroom.
A moment later, a horrified gasp echoed from the room.
"We need a medical transport unit immediately!" the caseworker called out over her radio, her voice shaking with outrage. "Child has extensive burns across her chest and stomach! Chemical residue present! Send Paramedics!"
The words hit the foyer like a bomb.
Adam froze on the staircase, three steps from the top. He looked at the caseworker, then turned his head slowly to look at Brooke.
"What..." Adam whispered, his face draining of all color until he looked like a ghost. "What did she just say?"
"She's lying, Adam!" Brooke shrieked, backing into the corner of the hallway, her hands trembling uncontrollably. "Maisie fell! I was applying medicine to her!"
"You put chemical drain cleaner on a metal spoon and pressed it against her chest, Brooke!" I screamed from the bottom of the stairs, tears streaming down my cheeks. "You did it so you could accuse Adam of abuse and take everything in a divorce! Show him your phone! Show him the texts to your lawyer!"
Adam stood frozen, staring at his wife as if looking at a stranger who had stolen the skin of the woman he loved.
"Brooke..." Adam's voice cracked into a hollow, agonizing sound of utter betrayal. "Is that true? Did you... did you hurt our daughter?"
"Adam, baby, listen to me—" Brooke reached out for his arm.
"DON'T TOUCH ME!" Adam roared, a sound of pure, primordial rage erupting from deep within his chest. He shoved her hands away, his eyes wide with horror and disgust. "DON'T YOU DARE TOUCH ME!"
The second officer moved in, pinning Brooke against the wall.
"Brooke Vance, you are under arrest for aggravated child abuse, felony assault, and child endangerment," Officer Davis declared, pulling Brooke's arms behind her back and snapping the heavy metal handcuffs onto her wrists.
"Get off me! Adam! Help me!" Brooke screamed, thrashing wildly as she was dragged down the stairs past the horrified eyes of Adam's entire family. "You can't do this! I'll ruin you, Adam! I'll tell everyone you did it! I'll make sure you never see her again!"
"Shut up!" Adam sobbed, dropping to his knees on the wooden stairs, burying his face in his hands as heavy, uncontrollable sobs racked his entire body. "Oh God... oh God... what have I done? What did I let happen?"
I ran up the stairs, passing Brooke as the police dragged her out the front door toward the waiting patrol car.
I didn't care about Brooke anymore. I didn't care about the trial that was to come.
I ran straight into Maisie's bedroom.
The CPS caseworker was gently holding my granddaughter, who was wrapped in a soft blanket, weeping softly into the woman's shoulder.
When Maisie saw me come through the door, her small eyes lit up through her tears. She reached out her small, trembling arms toward me.
"Grandma!" she sobbed.
I gathered her into my arms, holding her fragile body against my chest with a protective warmth that nothing in this world could ever break again.
"I'm here, baby," I whispered, kissing her forehead over and over while my tears soaked into her hair. "Grandma's here. The monster is gone. You're safe now."
Adam staggered into the room, falling to his knees beside us on the carpet. He looked at his daughter's tear-stained face, then down at the exposed red burns on her tiny chest, and let out a broken, agonizing cry of pure remorse.
"Maisie... baby... Daddy's so sorry," Adam wept, touching her small ankle gently, afraid to hurt her. "Daddy was so blind... I'm so, so sorry..."

Maisie looked at her father, then reached out one small, hesitant finger and touched his cheek, wiping away a tear.
"It's okay, Daddy," she whispered softly. "Grandma saved us."
