Chapter 4 - The Unraveling

"Evelyn, what is going on?" Sarah whispered into the phone, sound of splashing water and laughter ambient in the background. "You're scaring me."
"Brooke is hurting Maisie," I said flatly, omitting nothing. "Maisie has severe burns on her chest. Brooke told her that if she wore her swimsuit, she'd accuse Adam of doing it. I need you to go into the house right now. Get your phone out. Take a picture of the trash cans, the kitchen counter, or anything suspicious in the master bathroom. I need photos."
A sharp gasp sounded over the line. "Oh my God... Evelyn... are you serious?!"
"I have never been more serious in my life," I demanded. "CPS is on their way. But Brooke is inside right now. I need you to keep an eye on where Maisie is."
"Okay... okay, I'm going inside," Sarah stammered.
I watched through my windshield as Sarah stood up from her lounge chair in the backyard, holding her phone casually near her thigh, and slipped through the sliding glass door into the kitchen.
Ten minutes passed. My knuckles were white as I gripped the steering wheel, staring at the front facade of my son's suburban home.
Suddenly, my phone buzzed with an incoming text from Sarah.
It was a series of three photos.
My breath hitched.
The first photo showed the master bathroom vanity. A bottle of industrial-strength drain cleaner and a metal spoon sat beside an open container of ointment.
The second photo showed a printed paper sitting on Brooke's desk in the home office—a draft of a legal separation document, alongside printed medical articles detailing Munchausen syndrome by proxy and how to document domestic abuse injuries for court custody battles.
The third photo was a screenshot of a text conversation between Brooke and a local divorce lawyer dated two weeks ago:
Brooke: How severe do the physical injuries on a child need to be for a judge to grant an immediate, ex-parte sole custody order and remove the father from the home without visitation?
Lawyer: Any documented physical abuse where the father is named as the primary suspect will guarantee immediate removal and total custody to the reporting parent.
My stomach churned with pure horror.
It wasn't just physical abuse borne of cruelty. Brooke was systematically manufacturing a high-level child abuse case against my son to ensure she won total custody of Maisie, their house, and Adam's entire life savings in an upcoming divorce. She was burning her own daughter to build an airtight court case against an innocent man.
Before I could digest the horrifying reality of the documents, two white police cruisers, followed immediately by an unmarked silver SUV carrying CPS emergency officers, pulled onto the quiet suburban street with their lights flashing silently.
They parked directly behind my sedan.
A tall, stern female officer stepped out of the lead cruiser, accompanied by a woman holding an official state caseworker badge.
I slammed my car door open and ran up to them.
"Are you Evelyn Miller?" Officer Davis asked, her hand resting near her sidearm holster.
"Yes! Thank God you're here," I panted, showing them my phone screen containing the photos Sarah had just sent me. "Look at this! She's framing my son! She's actively abusing my granddaughter right now to build a custody case!"
Officer Davis glanced at the text messages on my phone, her professional demeanor instantly hardening into severe, laser-focused urgency.
"Ma'am, stay behind us," Officer Davis instructed, signaling her partner. "We are executing an immediate emergency welfare entry."
We marched up the front lawn. Officer Davis didn't knock softly. She pounded her heavy fist against the wooden front door.
BANG! BANG! BANG!
"Police Department! Open the door!"
The front door opened slowly. Adam stood there, holding a half-empty red plastic cup, looking completely bewildered.
"Officer? What... what's going on?" Adam asked, his face dropping when he saw me standing behind two armed police officers and a Child Protective Services investigator. "Mom? What did you do?!"
"Adam Vance," Officer Davis said sternly, stepping directly over the threshold into the foyer. "We received an emergency report of severe physical child abuse and domestic endangerment involving a minor in this residence. Where is your daughter?"
"She's... she's in her bedroom resting," Adam stammered, looking terrified. "This is a mistake! My mother is having a mental breakdown—"
"Step aside, sir," the CPS caseworker interrupted firmly. "We need to inspect the child immediately."
From the top of the staircase, Brooke appeared.
She was holding a damp cloth, her face pale as a sheet. When she saw the blue uniforms standing in her foyer, the arrogant, polished mask finally shattered into millions of unfixable pieces.

"What is the meaning of this?!" Brooke shrieked, her voice cracking into a high-pitched, hysterical panic. "Get out of my house! You don't have a warrant!"
"We don't need a warrant under exigent circumstances involving severe child endangerment, ma'am," Officer Davis declared, drawing her handcuffs as she moved up the stairs. "Where is the child?"
