Chapter 5 - THE SUN OVER LOMBARDY

Six months later.

The harsh winter rains that had once battered the hills of Lombardy had cleared, giving way to the warm, golden sunlight of early Italian summer. The sprawling gardens of Villa Moretti were in full bloom, filled with the rich scent of white roses, lavender, and blooming lemon trees.

On the wide stone terrace overlooking the rolling vineyards, a small wooden table was set with fresh strawberries, warm croissants, and a pot of dark Italian espresso.

Emma sat in a cushioned garden chair, wearing a sun hat and a bright yellow summer dress. She was busy using a small set of watercolor paints to color a picture of a giant falcon flying over a big stone castle. Beside her plate sat Barnaby the blue rabbit, wearing a tiny handmade red bow tie that Alessandro's personal tailor had custom-crafted for him.

"Look, Mommy!" Emma cheered, holding up her painting. "I made the falcon's wings gold!"

I sat across from her, wearing a soft linen dress, a light breeze blowing my dark hair across my shoulders. I was no longer wearing a gray maid's apron. I didn't clean the marble floors or polish the silver flutes anymore.

Two months after the night of the Council of Twelve, Alessandro had officially dissolved the old staff contracts, appointing me as the head director of the Moretti Family Children's Foundation—a multi-million-dollar charity initiative dedicated to funding medical care and housing for orphaned children across Northern Italy.

"It's beautiful, sweetheart," I said, leaning over to kiss her rosy cheek. "Make sure you show it to Alessandro when he finishes his call."

"Show what to me?" a low, warm voice spoke from the arched doorway.

Alessandro stepped out onto the terrace. He wore a crisp white linen shirt with the sleeves rolled up to his forearms, dark tailored trousers, and leather loafers. The cold, dark tension that used to permanently shadow his features was completely gone, replaced by a deep, quiet contentment.

Emma immediately jumped down from her chair, running across the stone terrace with her painting held high. "Look! It's your bird, Alessandro!"

Alessandro caught her easily with one arm, lifting her up onto his hip while examining the colorful painting with deep, genuine interest.

"A gold falcon," Alessandro praised, his dark eyes sparkling with warmth as he gently tapped her nose. "That is the grandest bird I have ever seen. We are going to frame this and put it right above my desk in the study."

"Yay!" Emma giggled, wrapping her small arms around his neck and kissing his cheek before sliding back down to chase a butterfly across the green lawn.

Alessandro watched her run toward the rose gardens, a soft, rare smile lingering on his face. He walked over to the table and stood behind my chair, resting his hands gently on my shoulders. His touch was warm, steady, and filled with a quiet strength that made me feel entirely safe.

"The Genoa dock negotiations were finalized this morning," Alessandro murmured softly against my hair. "The Romano family has surrendered their last remaining assets. The northern routes are completely secure."

I reached up, placing my hand over his on my shoulder. "No more shadow wars?"

"No more shadow wars," Alessandro promised. "From now on, this family operates entirely in the light."

He walked around the table and pulled out the chair beside me, sitting down. He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, velvet-lined mahogany box, placing it gently on the table between us.

I looked at the box, then up at his dark, intense eyes. "Alessandro... what is this?"

"Open it," he said softly.

I reached out with trembling fingers and unlatched the gold clasp.

Inside lay a breathtaking necklace crafted from pure white gold. The pendant was a delicate, intricately detailed songbird holding a small, flawless blue sapphire in its beak—a sapphire cut in the exact shape of a tiny wool rabbit's ear.

"On the night of the Council of Twelve," Alessandro spoke, his voice thick with a deep, unbreakable emotion, "a three-year-old girl stood on this marble floor with a blue wool rabbit and taught me what true courage looked like."

He reached across the table, taking my hand in his, his thumb gently tracing my knuckles.

"She protected her mother," Alessandro continued, looking directly into my eyes. "And ever since that night, all I have wanted to do is protect the two of you for the rest of my life."

Tears of pure, overwhelming happiness gathered in the corners of my eyes, sparkling in the warm Italian sun.

"Alessandro..." I whispered, my voice trembling.

"Marry me, Clara," he said, his tone devoid of the Mafia Don's command, holding only the raw, sincere devotion of a man who had found his home. "Let me give you and Emma the name, the home, and the legacy you deserve. No more cleaning other people's houses. This house... this heart... belongs to you."

I looked out across the sunny terrace, where Emma was laughing as she chased butterflies near the blooming lemon trees, her blue rabbit tucked safely under her arm.

Then, I looked back at the man who had knelt on cold marble to speak to my daughter as an equal.

May you like

"Yes," I whispered, a tear spilling over my cheek as I smiled from the bottom of my heart. "Yes, Alessandro. Absolute yes."

He smiled, leaning across the table to draw me into a deep, tender kiss as the warm summer sun bathed the hills of Lombardy in brilliant, golden light.
