Chapter 3 - THE RAT IN THE SILK

The fourth floor of Villa Moretti was a fortress within a fortress.

Unlike the opulent baroque styling of the main halls below, Alessandro’s private suite was designed with minimalist steel, dark oak, and heavy, bulletproof glass that looked out over the rain-swept hills of Lombardy. Armed guards stood at every elevator bank, their submachine guns slung discreetly across their chests.

I sat on the edge of a massive, dark leather sofa, watching Emma as she lay fast asleep under a heavy cashmere blanket. The stress of the evening had finally caught up to her small body, her quiet, rhythmic breathing filling the silent room. Barnaby the rabbit lay beside her pillow, the tiny tear in his ear neatly mended with white silk thread that Alessandro's personal valet had provided.

The heavy reinforced oak door swung open with a soft, electronic beep.

Alessandro walked in. He had removed his evening jacket, rolling his crisp white shirt sleeves up to his forearms, revealing the dark, intricate tattoos that traced the thick muscles of his wrists—ancient Sicilian symbols of loyalty, blood, and protection.

In his hand, he carried a crystal glass containing two fingers of dark amber scotch.

"She is sleeping deeply," Alessandro remarked softly, stepping silently across the hardwood floor toward the sofa.

"She was exhausted," I whispered, pulling the blanket higher up over Emma's shoulders. "Thank you... for letting us stay up here, sir."

Alessandro sat down in the heavy leather armchair across from me. He took a slow sip of his whiskey, his dark eyes studying me in the dim ambient light of the desk lamp.

"You don't need to call me 'sir' when we are alone, Clara," he said calmly. "You have worked in my home for two years. You know my routines, my habits, my temper. Yet tonight, you stood in front of a woman who could have destroyed your livelihood without blinking."

I lowered my head, staring at my hands resting in my lap. "I had to protect my daughter. Any mother would do the same."

"Not any mother," Alessandro countered quietly. "Most people in this city would have cowered. You didn't."

He set his glass down on the side table with a faint click.

"Marco completed the digital sweep of Vivian's devices ten minutes ago," Alessandro revealed, his tone shifting back to business. "She wasn't working alone. She wasn't even working for her father's family."

I looked up, surprised. "She wasn't?"

"No," Alessandro said, his jaw tightening. "Vivian was compromised three months ago by the Moretti family's chief rival in Milan—the Castiglione syndicate. They held evidence of her brother's illegal offshore embezzlements. They promised to wipe the debt clean if she provided them with real-time intelligence on our autumn shipping routes."

"The bug in Barnaby..."

"Was transmitting directly to a receiver stationed in a black van parked three miles down the valley," Alessandro confirmed. "For the last forty-eight hours, every private conversation spoken near your daughter was recorded by Castiglione's men."

A cold shudder ran down my spine. "What... what are you going to do?"

Alessandro leaned back in his chair, his eyes reflecting the sharp, cold intelligence that had made him the unchallenged ruler of the Milan underworld.

"We are going to feed them what they want to hear," Alessandro whispered. "Tomorrow night, there was supposed to be a major cash transport moving from our vault in Monza to the central bank in Milan. Castiglione believes he is going to ambush that convoy based on the intelligence Vivian gathered."

He leaned forward, placing his elbows on his knees, his dark gaze locking onto mine.

"Instead," Alessandro said softly, "my men will be waiting in that alleyway. And by midnight tomorrow, the Castiglione family will no longer exist in Northern Italy."

"And Vivian?" I asked, my voice barely above a breath.

Alessandro stood up slowly, walking over to the floor-to-ceiling glass window that overlooked the stormy estate grounds below.

"Vivian Romano made three fatal errors," Alessandro said, his voice dropping into a chilling, absolute register. "First, she brought a rival faction into my house. Second, she attempted to use an innocent child as a weapon of war."

He turned back to look at me, his eyes burning with an intense, terrifying light that sent a strange warmth fluttering through my chest.

"And third," Alessandro added quietly, "she laid her hands on the woman who belongs under my protection."

I swallowed hard, my throat suddenly dry. "Alessandro..."

Before I could say another word, a sharp knock echoed at the suite door. Marco stepped inside, holding an encrypted satellite phone.

"Boss," Marco said urgently. "We have a situation. The receiver van down the valley just moved. They know something is wrong. They've dispatched a four-man hit team toward the back gates of the villa."
