Chapter 3: The Midnight Confession

The rain poured heavily over Manhattan, washing the streets in a bleak, metallic sheen. Daniel Sterling stood beneath the awning of the Vance Psychiatric Clinic, his coat soaked, his mind operating with a terrifying clarity.
He didn’t wait for morning. He didn’t call ahead. He bypassed the security panel at the back entrance using a master key card his real estate firm had installed during the building's renovation three years prior.
The building was silent, smelling of antiseptic and old paper. Daniel took the private elevator to the penthouse office. When the doors slid open, he found Dr. Arthur Vance stuffing sensitive case files into a leather briefcase. The old doctor looked frantic, his hands trembling.
"Planning a sudden vacation, Arthur?" Daniel's voice sliced through the quiet room.
Dr. Vance jumped, dropping a folder. His face drained of color as he looked at Daniel’s dripping, menacing figure. "Daniel... what are you doing here? The clinic is closed."
"You signed a fraudulent psychiatric evaluation stating that Olivia Reed is mentally unstable," Daniel said, walking slowly into the office, locking the heavy mahogany door behind him. "You used your reputation to rip a two-year-old boy away from his mother. I want to know who paid you, and I want the real records."
"I don't know what you're talking about," Vance stammered, backing away until his knees hit his desk. "Those records are legitimate. Your father, Richard, came to me years ago with concerns—"
"Don't invoke my dead father's name to cover your current crimes!" Daniel roared, slamming both hands onto the desk, leaning in until he was inches from Vance’s face. "The documents leaked to the press were printed on paper with a watermark that wasn't manufactured until six months ago. My father has been dead for over a year, Arthur. You forged them last week."
Vance swallowed hard, looking toward the door. "You have no proof of that."
"I don't need proof to destroy you," Daniel whispered, his voice dangerously low. "Rachel Kim is currently auditing every single medical charity my father funded. We already found the five-million-dollar 'donation' made to your private research foundation last Tuesday. It didn't come from a charity, Arthur. It came from an offshore account managed by Julian Cross."
Vance’s eyes widened with sheer panic. "Daniel, please... you don't understand the pressure I was under. Julian Cross... he has leverage on me. He knows about my gambling debts in Macau. If I didn't help him, he was going to expose me to the medical board. I would have lost my license, my freedom, everything!"
"And what about Olivia's freedom?" Daniel shouted, his anger boiling over. "What about my son's safety? You threw a child into a foster care system just to save your own pathetic skin!"
Vance collapsed into his chair, burying his face in his hands. "It was supposed to be temporary. Julian just wanted to force you into a settlement. He told me the child wouldn't be harmed."
"Where is Oliver right now?" Daniel demanded, grabbing Vance by the lapels of his jacket, pulling him upright. "The state won't tell me his foster placement because of your fake evaluation. Where did they take him?"
"I... I don't know the exact house," Vance choked out. "But Julian has a contact within the Child Protective Services agency. A woman named Agent Miller. She was paid to place Oliver in a specific facility outside the city, where Daniel's lawyers couldn't reach him."
Daniel let go of Vance, disgust written across his features. He pulled out his phone, which was already recording the entire conversation. "You're going to write a full, signed confession right now. Every word, every transaction, every name. If you do it, I'll let the DA know you cooperated. If you don't, I will personally ensure you spend the rest of your natural life in a maximum-security prison."
Ten minutes later, Daniel walked out of the clinic with a signed affidavit and a flash drive containing the digital logs of Julian Cross's payments.
But as he stepped into the elevator, his phone buzzed. It was an unknown number. He answered it immediately.
"Daniel," Olivia’s voice came through, thick with tears and heavy breathing.
"Olivia? Where are you? Are you okay?"
"I found him, Daniel," she whispered, her voice trembling violently. "I tracked the CPS transport vehicle from the manor. They brought him to a private, fenced estate in upstate New York, near Bedford. It's not a foster home, Daniel. It's a private estate owned by the Cross family. They lied to the police. They’ve locked him inside."
Daniel’s heart stopped. "Olivia, do not go in there. Julian Cross is dangerous. Wait for me, I have the confession, I can get the police—"
"There is no time!" Olivia sobbed. "I can hear him crying from the security gates. They’re packing bags into a car, Daniel. I think Julian is planning to move him out of the state before the hearing on Friday. If he gets across state lines, we’ll never find him."
A sudden sound of rustling leaves and a sharp intake of breath echoed through the phone.
"Olivia? Olivia!" Daniel yelled.

A man’s cold voice cut into the line. "Well, look what we found lurking in the woods. The little maid thought she could play detective."
The line went completely dead.
