Chapter 2: The Price of Silence

Get out of my house," Daniel hissed, his body blocking the doorway as Olivia held Oliver tightly at the top of the grand staircase.
Julian Cross didn't flinch. He slowly adjusted his gold cufflinks, his eyes gleaming with the sadistic pleasure of a man who knew he held all the cards. "It's not your house for much longer, Daniel. As of four o'clock this afternoon, the board has officially suspended your executive powers. Furthermore, under section nine of the Sterling corporate bylaws, any active executive facing a high-profile scandal involving potential child endangerment must surrender access to company-owned properties. That includes Sterling Manor."
"This estate belongs to me, inherited directly from my father," Daniel roared.
"And your father signed a clause stating that if the family reputation was brought into disrepute by a bastard heir, the trustees would take control," Julian countered smoothly. He gestured to the Child Protective Services worker standing behind him. "We are here executing a court-ordered emergency removal. The media reports regarding Ms. Reed's psychological stability cannot be ignored. For the child's safety, Oliver must be placed in temporary foster care until a formal hearing can be conducted."
"Temporary foster care?" Olivia’s voice echoed down the hall, a heartbreaking mix of terror and rage. She descended the stairs, her grip on Oliver so tight the toddler whimpered. "You want to throw a two-year-old child into the system because of a forged piece of paper? I am a licensed nurse! I have undergone every background check imaginable!"
"A nursing license that was obtained under a different last name, using funds that cannot be verified," Julian said, his eyes shifting to Olivia. "The court views that as deception, Ms. Reed. Officers, please secure the child."
Two uniform police officers stepped forward.
Daniel lunged, grabbing the first officer by the vest. "Touch my son and I will destroy you!"
"Daniel, don't!" Rachel Kim’s voice barked from behind him. She had just arrived, sprinting through the open front doors, her breath ragged. She grabbed Daniel’s arm, pulling him back. "If you assault a police officer, they will jail you immediately. If you are in jail, Julian wins automatically. We have to fight this in court. Now."
Daniel’s chest heaved. He looked at Julian, then at the officers, and finally up at Olivia. The look of utter betrayal in her eyes tore his soul to shreds. She had trusted him to protect her, and once again, the Sterling world was tearing her baby away.
The social worker stepped up the stairs and gently, but firmly, pulled Oliver from Olivia’s arms.
"Mommy! Daddy!" Oliver screamed, his tiny hands reaching out, his face turning bright red with terror. "Mommy, hold me!"
Olivia collapsed on the stairs, her fingers scraping against the polished wood as she tried to hold onto his tiny shoes. "No! Please! Take me instead! Don't do this to him!"
Daniel had to hold her back as the officers escorted the social worker and a screaming Oliver out into the cold rain. The heavy doors slammed shut, the sound echoing through the cavernous hall like a gunshot.
Julian Cross smiled, smoothing his lapels. "A formal hearing is set for Friday morning. I suggest you find a very good lawyer, Daniel. Though, given your current financial freezes, I doubt you can afford one." With a mocking nod, Julian turned and walked out.
Inside the quiet manor, Olivia turned on Daniel, her grief transforming into pure, unadulterated fury.
"You promised!" she screamed, striking his chest with her fists. "You said he would never be taken again! You brought me into this house, you made him remember me, and now he’s sleeping in a stranger’s bed! I hate you, Daniel Sterling! I hate your name, I hate your money, and I hate myself for ever believing you were different!"
Daniel stood there, taking every blow, tears streaming down his own face. "Olivia, listen to me—"
"No! I won't listen!" She pushed past him, grabbing her small duffel bag from the closet. "I am leaving this cursed house. I am going to find my son, and if I have to burn your entire family empire to the ground to get him back, I will."
She slammed the door behind her, leaving Daniel alone in the middle of the dark, silent hall.
"Daniel," Rachel said softly, stepping up beside him. "We have less than seventy-two hours before the Friday hearing. If we don't find out who forged those new medical records, the judge will grant Julian Cross full temporary guardianship of Oliver, and he will use the child as leverage to force you to sign over your remaining shares."
Daniel wiped the tears from his eyes, a dangerous spark igniting in his blue eyes. The passive, guilt-ridden man was gone. In his place stood a father who had nothing left to lose.
"Who was the chief of psychiatry who signed those records?" Daniel asked, his voice deathly calm.
"Dr. Arthur Vance," Rachel replied. "He’s a highly respected figure, but he has one weakness. He was a close personal friend of your father."
"Then he has a price," Daniel said, walking over to his desk and grabbing his car keys. "Rachel, look into Julian Cross’s financial transactions over the past week. Look for any hidden offshore payouts. I’m going to pay Dr. Vance a visit. And I’m going to make sure he understands exactly what happens when you lie to a desperate father."
Meanwhile, across town in a dimly lit, high-end restaurant, Julian Cross sat at a secluded corner table. He raised a glass of scotch to the woman sitting opposite him.
Vanessa Hale clinked her glass against his, a wicked smile playing on her lips. "You handled that beautifully, Julian. The look on that maid's face was worth every penny I invested in your Cayman fund."
"The game is barely getting started, Vanessa," Julian smiled. "By Friday, Oliver will be under our legal control. Daniel will surrender his shares to save his son, and you will finally get the vengeance you deserve for being humiliated in that ballroom."
Vanessa’s eyes narrowed. "I don’t just want vengeance, Julian. I want Olivia Reed ruined so completely she’ll never dare look at a wealthy man again. But tell me, are you sure Dr. Vance won't crack? Daniel isn't a fool."

Julian laughed softly. "Vance has too much to lose. If he confesses, his entire career is over. He’ll take the secret to his grave."
Little did Julian know, Daniel was already outside Dr. Vance’s private clinic, watching the lights on the top floor turn off.
