Chapter 5 - CLEANSING THE EMPIRE

While Alina rested over the next forty-eight hours under 24/7 guard, I didn't sit idle.

The snake's head had been cut off when Matteo died in the fire, but his nest was still crawling with corrupt lieutenants, dirty politicians, and syndicate loyalists who had benefited from my family’s suffering.

It was time for a complete purge.

Sitting in my private study at the Vitelli estate, surrounded by monitors and armed men, I inserted the flash drive Alina had given me into my secure server.

The depth of Matteo’s betrayal was astoundingly vast. He had embezzled over two hundred million dollars from the family accounts, routed through shell companies managed by Daniel Mercer, and was planning a hostile takeover of the entire Midwest syndicate operations within the month.

"Viktor," I said, stepping up to the glass window overlooking the rainy city skyline.

"Yes, Don Vitelli?"

"Call a meeting of the High Council," I ordered, my voice cold as liquid nitrogen. "Every caporegime, every boss of the five families, every politician on our payroll. Tell them the Don is holding an emergency summit at the Grand Hotel tonight."

"And if some of Matteo’s men refuse to show?" Viktor asked, a lethal glint in his eye.

"Then bring them in chains," I replied.

That night, the ballroom of the Grand Hotel was filled with the most powerful and dangerous men in the Chicago underworld. Whispers circulated like poison through the room. Rumors had spread that I had lost my mind, that my dead family had returned, and that Matteo had mysteriously vanished.

At precisely 9:00 PM, the heavy double doors of the ballroom slammed open.

I walked in.

I was wearing my tailored black suit, but this time, I wasn't alone. On my right was Viktor. On my left were twenty heavily armed tactical soldiers, locking down every exit.

The chatter in the room instantly died. The pressure of my presence made powerful men pull back in their chairs.

I walked up to the head of the long mahogany table and stood at the throne chair that Matteo had secretly coveted for six years.

"Gentlemen," I began, my voice echoing off the high ceilings. "Six years ago, a lie was brought into this house. A lie that stole my wife, my daughter, and my peace."

I threw a heavy stack of printed documents onto the center of the table, followed by a projector remote.

With a click, the large screen behind me flashed to life.

Bank records, wiretaps, and video recordings of Matteo meeting with rival Russian syndicate bosses filled the screen. The evidence showed every traitorous agreement, every hit ordered, and every name of the capos in this very room who had taken Matteo’s dirty money.

Gasps of shock echoed through the room. Three capos—Matteo’s core conspirators—instantly reached for their concealed weapons.

BANG! BANG! BANG!

Before their hands could even touch their holsters, Viktor’s snipers positioned on the upper balcony eliminated them with terrifying precision. They slumped over the table, blood soaking into the white tablecloth.

The rest of the bosses scrambled back, raising their hands in absolute terror.

"Marco! Please!" one elderly Don stammered, shaking violently. "We didn't know! Matteo told us you were stepping down! He lied to us all!"

"I know who was ignorant," I said, stepping over the fallen men, looking around the room with eyes of pure steel. "And I know who was guilty. The guilty are dead. The ignorant will listen closely to my new rules."

I leaned over the table, pressing my palms against the wood.

"The Vitelli family is changing," I announced calmly. "We are cutting ties with the human trafficking, the illegal weapons, and the Russian syndicate. From tonight, every cent of our capital will be transitioned into legitimate enterprises, charities, and legitimate infrastructure. Anyone who attempts to bring poison back into my city, anyone who threatens an innocent child or a mother... will meet the same fate as Matteo Rizzo."

I stood up straight, buttoning my suit jacket.

"Is there any objection?"

The room was deathly silent. Every boss bowed their head in absolute submission.

"Good," I said turning away. "Clean up this mess. I have to go home to my family."
