Chapter 3 - BLOOD AND TRUTH

"Marco... Sophia..." Alina wept, collapsing into my arms the moment the ropes fell away. She was light as a feather, her body burning with a severe fever, but her hands clutched my suit lapels with desperate strength. "Is she... is she safe?"
"She's safe, my love," I whispered, lifting her into my arms, pressing my lips against her forehead. "She's at St. Margaret's. She called me Daddy. She has your smile."
Tears washed tracks through the soot on Alina's pale cheeks. "I tried to hide her... I tried so hard..."
"Shh," I hushed her, my heart breaking at her fragile state. "You did incredible. Now it's my turn."
The roof above us groaned dangerously. Sparks fell like rain as the support structures gave way.
"We have to get out of here," I said, carrying her out of the burning office.
As we reached the catwalk, a shadow stepped out from the smoke near the exit ladder.
Matteo hadn't fled. He was waiting.
In his hand was a heavy-caliber shotgun aimed straight at my chest.
"How touching," Matteo sneered, his face illuminated by the dancing flames. "The tragic lovers, reunited at last in their funeral pyre."
I didn't drop Alina. I held her closer, my body shielding her entirely from Matteo’s sight.
"Put the gun down, Matteo," I said, my voice dead and devoid of emotion. "You've lost. Viktor’s men have surrounded the docks. There is no escape for you."
"I don't need to escape!" Matteo yelled, his composure breaking, revealing the pathetic, desperate coward underneath. "If I can't have the empire, if I can't have the glory, then nobody will! I’ll kill you both, take the girl, and disappear to South America!"
"You touch my daughter," I rasped, "and hell won't be hot enough for what I do to you."
Alina weakly reached down from my arms, her fingers slipping into my side coat pocket.
Matteo cocked the shotgun. "End of the line, Marco—"
BANG! BANG!
Two gunshots rang out, but they didn't come from Matteo’s shotgun.
They came from the small backup pistol Alina had pulled from my pocket.
The bullets hit Matteo squarely in the shoulder and hip. He shrieked in pain, dropping the shotgun, and stumbled backward over the low railing of the catwalk.
He fell thirty feet into the roaring inferno below. His scream cut short as the main fuel tank exploded beneath him, consuming him in a tower of violent orange fire.
I didn't look back.
Carrying Alina, I kicked open the emergency exit door, busting out into the cool, pouring rain of the Chicago night just as the roof of Warehouse 14 collapsed inward with a thunderous roar.
Outside, five black SUVs screeched to a halt on the wet pavement. Viktor leaped out from the lead vehicle, squad of heavy tactical guards backing him up.
"Boss!" Viktor yelled, rushing forward with a blanket. "Medical team is in the van!"
I placed Alina gently onto the gurney inside the armored van, holding her hand tightly.
"Marco..." she whimpered, her energy fading fast as the trauma and shock caught up to her. "Don't let go..."
"I'm right here," I promised, squeezing her cold fingers. "Viktor, drive! To the private clinic! NOW!"
The drive was a blur of flashing lights and screaming sirens. In the back of the medical transport, the paramedics stabilized Alina, putting her on oxygen and IV fluids.
I sat beside her, holding the small flash drive she had left at the orphanage.
I plugged it into my tablet.
Files, bank accounts, recorded phone calls, and video logs filled the screen.
Alina hadn't just been hiding for six years. She had been building an airtight case against Matteo’s entire underground syndicate network.
She had documented every dirty judge, every corrupt politician, and every rival boss Matteo had bribed to overthrow me. She had sacrificed her youth, her comfort, and her safety to protect me from an invisible enemy while ensuring that one day, I would have the evidence to crush them all.
My tears dripped onto the tablet screen.
All those years I had spent bitter, angry at the world, believing she had abandoned our love... when in reality, she was fighting a silent war in the dark just to keep our family’s heartbeat alive.
The ambulance pulled into the underground bay of my private, highly secured medical facility. Doctors rushed Alina into the emergency surgical suite to treat her smoke inhalation and infection.
I stood in the clean, bright corridor, covered in soot, ash, and blood.
Viktor walked up to me, handing me a clean towel and a satellite phone.
"The orphanage is secure, Boss," Viktor reported. "Sister Catherine and little Sophia are in the safehouse downstairs. The girl keeps asking for her mother and father."

I looked down at my blood-stained hands.
"Bring her here, Viktor," I whispered, my voice thick with emotion. "Bring my daughter home."
