Chapter 4 - The Grand Gala Collapses

At 5:00 PM, the Thorne estate was in full swing.
Despite Callie’s blood having been hastily scrubbed from the white Persian rug, Meredith had insisted the Easter charity gala proceed as scheduled. Over two hundred of the state’s wealthiest socialites, politicians, and business executives filled the grand ballroom, sipping champagne under crystal chandeliers.
Simon stood near the center stage, wearing a tailored tuxedo, laughing alongside high-profile investors. Meredith was beaming, holding court with local news reporters.
"We are so blessed to host this evening," Meredith gushed into a microphone. "Family, faith, and community are the pillars of the Thorne legacy."
Suddenly, the massive iron gates at the edge of the property were breached.
Four armored federal strike vehicles smashed right through the heavy wrought-iron doors, roaring up the pristine driveway and tearing across the manicured lawns. Guests shrieked as tactical teams in full combat gear swarmed the terrace, assault rifles raised.
"FEDERAL AGENTS! NO ONE MOVE! STAY WHERE YOU ARE!"
The ballroom erupted into mass panic. Champagne glasses shattered against the floor. Meredith dropped her microphone, her face draining of all color as armed agents surrounded the stage.
I walked through the broken front doors, dressed in a sharp, dark suit, accompanied by Special Agent Reynolds and two dozen federal officers.
"What is the meaning of this?!" Simon roared, trying to push past an agent. "Do you know who I am?! My father will destroy every single one of you!"
"Your father was arrested forty minutes ago at the airport trying to board a private jet to Dubai," Agent Reynolds said calmly, stepping forward. "His assets are frozen. His passport is revoked."
"What?!" Meredith screamed, clutching her diamond necklace. "This is absurd! On what grounds?!"
I stepped into the center of the room. The entire crowd went silent as they recognized me—the man Meredith had dismissed as a useless old mechanic in a beat-up truck.
"On the grounds of federal racketeering, tax evasion, money laundering, and treason," I said, my voice echoing off the high ceilings. "And for you, Simon... aggravated assault, attempted murder, and unlawful restraint."
Simon sneered, trying to maintain his bravado. "You have no proof! It’s her word against mine!"
"We don't need her word," I replied coolly.
I gestured to the massive digital screen behind the stage—the one usually reserved for showing the Thorne family's corporate charity videos. Agent Reynolds pressed a button on a tablet.
The screen flickered to life.
It played high-definition security footage from the hallway cameras inside the house—footage that Meredith had thought was safely wiped from their local server, completely unaware that federal cyber units had pulled it from the cloud.
The entire ballroom watched in horror as the video clearly showed Simon throwing Callie to the floor, striking her repeatedly, while Meredith stood by, calmly taking a sip of her drink and walking away.

Gasp of horror rippled through the high-society crowd. Investors backed away from Simon as if he were covered in poison. Local reporters immediately pointed their cameras at the screen, broadcasting the entire horrifying truth live across the state.
"You're done, Simon," I whispered.
