Chapter 3 - The Wall Comes Down

The county hospital didn't know what hit them.

When my pickup pulled up, a black unmarked helicopter was already landing on the helipad. A team of four elite trauma surgeons—personnel flown in directly from the regional military medical base under Joint Chiefs orders—met me at the doors with a gurney.

"We have her, General," the lead surgeon said, wheeling Callie straight into a private, guarded surgical suite.

While Callie was stabilized, I sat on a bench in the hallway, my hands covered in her dried blood.

At 2:15 PM, my satellite phone buzzed. It was Ross.

"General, the initial audit is complete. It’s worse than expected," Ross reported. "Thorne Global Holdings is currently under a quiet federal investigation for a ninety-million-dollar tax fraud scheme and money laundering for overseas cartels. The local district attorney and Police Chief Vance have been taking bribes to bury domestic abuse calls, DUI charges, and corporate safety violations for the past decade."

"How deep does it go?" I asked.

"Deep enough to put the entire family in federal prison for the rest of their natural lives," Ross replied. "Simon Thorne has three previous quiet settlements with ex-girlfriends regarding physical assault—all paid out of a shadow account managed by Meredith Thorne."

"Send the files to the FBI Special Agent in Charge, regional director," I commanded. "And call the Federal Marshal Service. Tell them I am personally revoking the Thorne family’s bail eligibility."

Ten minutes later, Chief William Vance walked into the hospital lobby, escorted by two local officers. He looked smug, adjusting his belt, expecting to intimidate an old retired mechanic in a flannel shirt.

"Arthur Miller?" Chief Vance asked, stepping up to me with a heavy sigh. "Look, Simon called me. He said there was an incident. We really don't need to make a federal case out of a family argument—"

Before he could finish his sentence, four black SUVs with darkened windows screeched to a halt outside the glass doors. Ten heavily armed federal agents from the FBI and Internal Revenue Service Criminal Investigation division poured into the lobby, weapons drawn.

Leading them was Special Agent Vance Reynolds. He walked straight past Chief Vance and stood at attention right in front of me.

"General Miller, sir," Reynolds said respectfully. "The federal warrants have been signed by the Supreme Court circuit judge. We are ready to execute."

Chief Vance went dead pale, his mouth hanging open. "F-Federal warrants? General?! What the hell is going on here?!"

I stood up, towering over the corrupt chief, my gaze cold and unyielding. "Chief Vance, you are under arrest for federal conspiracy, obstruction of justice, and receiving kickbacks from an organized criminal entity."

Reynolds slapped the handcuffs on the Chief's wrists before he could even process what was happening.

"Take him away," I ordered quietly. "And tell the strike team to move in on the Thorne estate."
