Chapter 6 - The Return of Sarah

The minutes ticked by like agonizing hours. The kitchen clock seemed to mock us with its steady, mechanical rhythm. Elena sat at the table with her head bowed, recovering slowly under the gentle pat of Lily’s small hand on her shoulder. Baby Tommy had finally drifted off into an exhausted, deep sleep in my arms.

Then, the crunch of gravel echoed from the driveway.

A car door slammed shut. Footsteps clicked against the concrete walkway outside.

“She’s here,” Elena whispered, her body trembling violently.

“Take the kids into the pantry and stay locked inside,” I instructed firmly, helping Elena guide Lily and Tommy into the small walk-in pantry, blocking the door with a heavy wooden crate for extra security. “I’ve got this.”

I took a deep breath, walked out of the kitchen, and stood waiting in the dimly lit foyer.

The front door unlocked with a soft click. The heavy oak panel swung open, and Sarah stepped inside, carrying two large plastic grocery bags filled with food. She looked relaxed, humming a soft tune under her breath—the picture-perfect suburban mother returning from an errand.

She stopped dead in her tracks the moment she saw me standing in the hallway.

The grocery bags slipped from her hands, crashing to the floor. Canned goods rolled across the hardwood.

“Mark...?” she stammered, her face turning chalk-white. “You... you weren't supposed to be back until Tuesday.”

I didn't move an inch. I stared at the woman I had loved and trusted for six years, seeing the cold, calculating monster beneath the smiling surface for the very first time.

“Change of plans, Sarah,” I said, my voice dangerously calm. “I came home early. And I found the kids on the floor.”

Sarah’s eyes darted frantically toward the hallway leading to the guest room. She realized instantly that the deadbolt was broken, the door was wide open, and her darkest secret was out in the open.

Her panic vanished in a fraction of a second, replaced by a cold, venomous glare. The mask dropped entirely.

“You shouldn't have looked in that room, Mark,” she hissed, her voice dripping with malice. “You ruined everything. I built this life! I earned this family!”
