Chapter 4 - The Twin’s Nightmare

“Elena...?” I breathed out, my voice shaking so violently I could barely form the syllables.

The woman on the floor blinked against the harsh hallway light, her chapped lips parting in shock. “Mark...?” she croaked out, her voice raspy from days without water. “You’re... you’re finally home.”

I rushed forward, dropping to my knees beside her, desperately pulling at the heavy steel chain wrapped around the iron radiator pipe. A heavy brass padlock secured the links. I looked around the room in a blind panic until my eyes landed on a heavy iron wrench sitting on the windowsill. Grabbing it, I jammed the tool into the lock’s shackle and threw all my weight onto it. With a sharp metallic snap, the shackle broke.

Elena slumped forward into my arms, sobbing uncontrollably as I unwrapped the cold metal chain from her bruised wrist.

“Mark... thank God,” she wept, clinging to my jacket. “I didn't think... I didn't think we would survive another day.”

“What is happening here, Elena?” I demanded, gently pulling her back to look into her eyes. “Sarah told me you died in a car crash in Europe five years ago! How are you here? Why were you locked in this room?”

Elena looked up at me, her hollow eyes wide with absolute terror. “Sarah didn't lose me in a crash, Mark. Sarah staged it. She stole my identity, she took my passport, and when I tried to come back home after escaping her abusive husband abroad... she trapped me here.”

The words hit me like physical blows. My entire marriage, my life, my family—constructed on a foundation of monstrous deceit.

“She told the kids you were an evil aunt who wanted to hurt them,” I whispered, pieces of Sarah’s manipulative behavior over the years suddenly clicking into a terrifying, cohesive pattern. “She locked you in here... and when I went on my business trips, she stopped feeding you. And when I left this time... she accidentally locked herself out of the room, leaving you and the kids with no food or water for days.”

Elena nodded weakly, tears streaming down her hollow cheeks. “She lost her mind, Mark. She’s completely unhinged. And she went to the grocery store three hours ago... she’ll be back any minute.”
