Chapter 6 - The Feast of Gratitude

Two years later.
Thanksgiving night had returned to Franklin, Tennessee.
Outside, a soft, autumn rain fell against the windows of the newly renovated, sunlit dining room of the Belle Meade estate.
Inside, the long mahogany table was covered in a feast—a roasted turkey, candied yams, cranberry sauce, and a massive bowl of homemade stuffing.
Gathered around the table were twenty people.
There were store employees from the Franklin branch, including several line-level workers whom Clare had promoted into management roles; Daniel’s corporate executive assistant, Sarah; Arthur, the security driver, who was laughing heartily with a plate full of pie; and Clare’s extended family.
At the head of the table sat Daniel Mercer, wearing a dark blue sweater, his arm wrapped affectionately around Clare, who wore a shimmering emerald dress.
On Clare's left hand, a beautiful diamond ring caught the warm light of the overhead chandelier—a symbol of their marriage six months earlier in the very garden where Lily had first played with her puppy.
Lily, now fourteen, stood up at her place at the table, tapping her glass with a spoon.
"Attention, everyone!" Lily announced loudly, grinning brightly. "As the official founder of this table, I have a speech to make!"
The whole room clapped and cheered.
"Three years ago," Lily said, looking around the room with a maturity beyond her years, "my mom and I met a lonely man eating turkey by himself in a diner. He looked like he needed a seat. So I gave him one."
She turned her gaze toward Daniel, her eyes shining with warmth.
"And in return, he gave my mom the respect she deserved, gave me a home, and gave all of us a family that cares about each other," Lily said, raising her glass of sparkling cider. "So here's to the stranger who sat in our extra chair."
"To Daniel!" the entire room raised their glasses, shouting happily.
Daniel stood up, pulling Clare up beside him. He looked around the table at the bright, happy faces of his friends, his employees, his daughter, and his wife.
The dark, quiet years of loneliness were gone, replaced by an unbreakable circle of love, laughter, and community.
Daniel looked down at Clare, wrapping his arm securely around her waist, and kissed her deeply as the room erupted into cheers.

"Thank you, Clare," Daniel whispered against her lips as the rain tapped softly against the warm glass windows. "For giving me a place at your table."
"Always, Daniel," Clare smiled, holding him close. "You're home."
