Chapter 5 - The Unbroken Light

Six months later.

The spring sun shone brightly over the rolling green hills of Belle Meade, just outside Nashville.

At the end of a long, tree-lined driveway sat Daniel Mercer's estate—a magnificent stone manor house surrounded by blooming hydrangeas, manicured lawns, and ancient oak trees.

For three years, the house had been dark, silent, and cold.

Today, the windows were thrown wide open, allowing the sweet scent of spring flowers and fresh air to drift through the wide hallways.

From the backyard garden, the sound of happy laughter echoed against the stone walls.

Lily, now twelve years old, was running across the grass with a golden retriever puppy that Daniel had given her for her birthday three weeks ago.

On the wide stone patio, a large wooden dining table was set with fresh flowers, silver pitcher drinks, and a delicious barbecue lunch.

Clare stood near the patio railing, wearing a yellow sundress, watching Lily throw a tennis ball across the lawn.

Under Clare's leadership as Store Director, the Franklin branch of Mercer Home and Living had become the highest-performing and highest-rated employee-satisfaction location in the entire southeastern region. But more importantly, Clare’s life had been completely transformed. She walked with a quiet confidence, her eyes glowing with happiness and peace.

A pair of strong, warm arms wrapped gently around her waist from behind.

Daniel rested his chin lightly on her shoulder, pulling her back against his chest. He smelled of fresh pine, leather, and rain.

"What are you thinking about?" Daniel whispered into her ear, kissing her cheek softly.

Clare rested her hands over his, leaning back against his warm frame. "I was just thinking about that snowy Thanksgiving night at the diner."

Daniel chuckled softly, looking out at Lily playing with the puppy. "You know, Arthur told me later that I looked so miserable sitting in that corner booth that he was about to come inside and drag me out."

"I'm glad he didn't," Clare smiled, turning in his arms to face him. "If you had left, I never would have known the man behind the company."

Daniel looked down at her, his dark eyes filled with a deep, devotion that made Clare's heart soar. He reached into his pocket, pulling out a small, framed object.

It was Lily’s orange construction paper card—DANIEL — OUR TABLE—now safely preserved behind UV-protective glass inside a hand-carved mahogany frame.

"I keep this on my desk in the study," Daniel said softly, tracing the glass with his thumb. "To remind me of the night my life truly began again."

Clare touched his cheek gently. "You don't ever have to be lonely again, Daniel."

"I know," Daniel whispered, leaning down to press his lips against hers in a long, sweet kiss that filled the warm spring air with pure magic.
