Chapter 6 - A New Empire of Peace

Three months later, the summer sun over Lake Michigan was bright and warm, casting a sparkling blue sheet across the water.

In the backyard of a stunning, unfortified estate in Grand Haven, Michigan—far beyond the reach of the Chicago underworld—Emma sat in a white wooden rocking chair. She was wearing a simple sun dress, her hair blowing gently in the lake breeze.

In her arms, sleeping peacefully beneath a light pink blanket, was baby Grace.

The baby had a tuft of dark, silky hair and the long, delicate eyelashes of her mother. When she occasionally squirmed in her sleep, she would grip Emma’s finger with a surprisingly strong hold.

The sound of footsteps on the wooden deck made Emma turn.

Adrian walked out, carrying a tray with two tall glasses of iced tea. He had traded his tailored charcoal suits for a soft linen shirt and jeans. The cold, calculating look that had once defined his face was gone, replaced by a deep, tranquil peace.

He set the tray down and walked over, leaning down to press a soft kiss to Emma’s lips, then to the top of Grace’s head.

"She’s been asleep for an hour," Emma whispered, smiling up at him. "I think she likes the sound of the waves."

"She’s a beach girl," Adrian smiled, pulling up a chair beside them. He reached out, his large hand gently stroking the baby’s tiny cheek. "Just like her mother."

The transition had not been easy, but it had been absolute.

Following the night on the lake, Adrian had used the federal evidence against Dominic Vitucci to completely dismantle the cartel. With Vitucci behind bars for life and his own organization reorganized into a purely legitimate, transparent corporate entity, Adrian had officially stepped down. He handed the keys to Moretti Holdings to Nathan Briggs, who had happily retired from active security to run a legitimate logistics firm.

Adrian had sold the Lake Forest fortress, leaving behind the dark legacy of his father. They had moved across the lake to Michigan, starting over in a community where no one knew his name, and no one looked over their shoulder.

"Nathan called this morning," Adrian said, sipping his tea. "The final transition of the real estate portfolio is complete. Everything is clean, Emma. The Moretti name belongs entirely to us now. Not the streets."

Emma reached out, wrapping her fingers around his. "And Marcus Vance?"

"His plea deal was rejected," Adrian said quietly. "He’ll be spending the rest of his days in a federal penitentiary. He won't ever be a threat to this family again."

Emma looked out over the water, a deep, profound sense of safety washing over her. For so long, she had believed that loving Adrian meant living in a cage of fear. But he had torn down the cage, fought the monsters, and built a sanctuary in its place.

"Thank you, Adrian," she murmured.

"For what?"

"For not letting me go," she said, looking into his dark eyes. "Even when I was hiding. Even when I was angry."

Adrian leaned over, his hand resting over hers and Grace's. "I told you, Emma. I am going to spend the rest of my life giving you back the time we lost. We’re starting a new empire today. One built on peace, love, and her."

Grace let out a tiny, soft yawn in her sleep, her little fist opening against Emma’s chest.

Adrian and Emma looked at each other, their smiles matching the bright, clear horizon stretching out before them. The storm had finally passed, and the future was completely theirs to write.
