Chapter 2 - The Fortified Cage

The transition from the sterile, quiet clinic to the chaotic reality of Adrian’s world happened in a heartbeat.

"Get behind me," Adrian commanded, his voice leaving no room for argument. He didn't wait for Emma to move; he wrapped a heavy arm around her waist, pulling her flush against his side as Nathan led the way down the back service corridor of the clinic.

"Adrian, my car—my things—" Emma panicked, her hands clutching his dark wool coat.

"Forget them. Nathan’s team will handle it," Adrian muttered, his eyes scanning every doorway they passed. "Your only job right now is to breathe. Don't let your heart rate spike."

How she was supposed to keep her heart rate down while escaping a potential mob hit was beyond her, but she focused on the steady, solid rhythm of Adrian’s footsteps beside her.

They exited through the clinic’s laundry bay just as the screech of tires echoed from the front street. Nathan opened the heavy armored door of Adrian’s custom Cadillac Escalade. Adrian lifted Emma into the backseat with surprising gentleness before climbing in beside her. The door slammed shut with a heavy, pressurized thud, sealing them in a soundproof fortress of leather and steel.

"Go," Adrian ordered the driver.

The vehicle lunged forward, weaving through the tight alleyways of Lincoln Park before bursting onto the Kennedy Expressway. Through the tinted windows, Emma watched Chicago blur past in a gray sheet of afternoon rain.

She looked down at her lap, her hands trembling. The reality of what had just happened was crashing down on her. The divorce was a lie. Adrian hadn't abandoned her. The anger that had fueled her survival for eight long months suddenly had nowhere to go, leaving behind an empty, aching hollow of grief and wasted time.

"Adrian," she whispered, her voice cracking. "We lost eight months."

Adrian didn't answer immediately. He reached out, his large, scarred hand covering her trembling ones. He squeezed gently. "I am going to give you back every single second we lost, Emma. I swear to you."

The Escalade pulled up to the massive iron gates of the Moretti estate in Lake Forest. The towering stone mansion, surrounded by ten acres of heavily wooded, high-security grounds, had once been Emma’s home. It was the place where they had laughed, loved, and built a life—before the shadows of Adrian’s legacy tore them apart.

As the car stopped under the grand portico, Adrian got out and opened her door, offering his hand. Emma hesitated, looking at the looming mansion.

"I know," Adrian said softly, reading the doubt on her face. "It feels like a cage. But right now, it’s the only place in this state where I can guarantee you and our daughter will wake up safe tomorrow morning."

Emma took his hand.

The interior of the house was exactly as she had left it, yet entirely different. The grand foyer was immaculate, but the warmth was gone. There were no fresh flowers, no music playing in the background. It felt like a museum dedicated to a life that had ended.

Adrian led her up the grand staircase to the master suite. To Emma’s surprise, the room had been completely prepared. A brand-new, beautifully carved wooden crib stood in the corner. Shelves were stacked with plush toys, organic baby blankets, and boxes of premium diapers.

Emma stared at the nursery setup, her mouth slightly open. "You... you built a nursery?"

Adrian stood by the door, looking uncharacteristically self-conscious. "When Vance told me you had left, I didn't believe him at first. I searched. I kept this room ready, hoping... praying that you would walk back through that door. When I realized you weren't coming back, I couldn't bring myself to dismantle it. And then, when I finally accepted you were gone, I ordered the baby furniture anyway. I don't know why. Maybe a part of me knew. Maybe I just needed to believe that our story wasn't finished."

Emma walked over to the crib, running her fingers along the polished wood. A tear fell, splashing onto the soft linen sheet inside.

Adrian walked up behind her. He didn't touch her, respecting her boundaries, but his warmth radiated against her back. "Rest, Emma. You’ve been on your feet for months. I have a team of private obstetricians arriving in an hour to set up a medical wing downstairs. You are not going back to that public clinic."

"And what about Marcus Vance?" Emma asked, turning to face him. "What are you going to do to him?"

May you like

Adrian’s expression darkened, the soft fatherly light in his eyes instantly replaced by the cold, calculating gaze of the Moretti patriarch.

"I am going to remind him why people in this city fear my name," Adrian said quietly. "Sleep, Emma. When you wake up, the man who tore our lives apart will no longer be a threat."
