Chapter 5 - The Fall of the Wolf

A massive spotlight slammed on from the top of the container, blinding Volkov and his men.
Standing beside Marco atop the steel container was me. I held a heavy industrial flare-gun—the kind used on commercial ships—aimed directly at the open fuel barrels Volkov’s men had staged along the pier.
"Clara?!" Alessandro called up, a mix of shock and quiet pride filling his voice.
"I told you, Alessandro," I called down through the rain, my voice ringing steady and clear across the water. "Evidence shouldn't exist in only one person's hands. And neither should the fight."
Volkov's men panicked, lowering their weapons as they realized they were trapped in the open, surrounded by high-powered spotlights and heavily armed Moretti guards who materialized from the shadow of every container.
"Drop your weapons!" Marco’s voice boomed over a loudspeaker. "Federal marshals and NYPD are two minutes behind us! The evidence folder detailing your extortion racket was uploaded to the District Attorney's office ten minutes ago!"
Volkov looked around wildly, his eyes darting from Alessandro to me, then to the flashing red and blue lights appearing on the bridge in the distance. He realized in one terrifying instant that the "weakness" he had tried to exploit was actually the very trap that had destroyed his empire.
"You ruined everything..." Volkov hissed, raising his cane towards Alessandro in a final, desperate surge of rage.
Alessandro moved like lightning. He stepped inside Volkov's guard, seized the old man's wrist, and twisted it downward. The silver cane clattered to the concrete, followed by the heavy thud of Volkov being forced to his knees.

Alessandro leaned down, his face inches from the defeated syndicate leader.
"You made one fatal mistake, Nikolai," Alessandro whispered softly so only Volkov could hear. "You thought loving them made me weak. You didn't realize it made me invincible."
