Chapter 2 - The Fortress in the Shadows

The ballroom exploded into calculated chaos.
Guests didn't scream—they were people who knew the rules of the underworld. They ducked behind marble pillars, while Alessandro's guards instantly formed a human shield around the perimeter.
Marco pulled a dark heavy radio from his coat. "Lock down the perimeter! Seal the iron gates and cut the main estate power! Shift to internal generators now!"
The glittering crystal chandeliers flickered once, twice, and vanished into total darkness. A second later, emergency red strip-lighting hummed to life along the baseboards, casting long, blood-red shadows across the room.
Alessandro didn't flinch. In one swift movement, he scooped Emma up into his left arm and grabbed my wrist with his right. His grip was firm, warm, and utterly unshakeable.
"Alessandro—" I gasped, stumbling slightly on the polished floor.
"Keep moving, Clara," he commanded softly against my ear. "We go down."
He led us through a hidden door concealed behind a dark oak tapestry in the library. We descended a narrow spiral staircase of poured concrete, deep into the foundation of the Moretti estate. The sound of rain and distant gunfire faded, replaced by the heavy, rhythmic thrum of air filtration units.
The room at the bottom of the stairs was not a dusty cellar. It was a high-tech command center lined with flickering surveillance monitors, leather chairs, and wall-mounted communications gear.
Alessandro set Emma down gently on a leather couch. She didn't cry. She just looked up at him with those wide, observant eyes, her little hand reaching out to touch his lapel.
"Is the bad man with the phone outside?" she asked softly.
Alessandro knelt in front of her again, completely ignoring the red warning lights flashing on the security console behind him. "He was outside, Emma. But he won't get inside this room. I give you my word."
"Okay," Emma said simply. She pulled her hand out of her pocket and held out her open palm. In the middle rested the loose pearl button. "You can keep this for good luck. Like the blue star button."
Alessandro took the tiny pearl with immense care, as if it were a rare diamond. He slipped it into his vest pocket, right over his heart.
"Thank you, little one," he murmured.
He stood up and turned to me. The gentle father figure vanished, replaced instantly by the ruthless head of the Moretti crime family.
"Marco," Alessandro said into his radio. "Tell me we have the shooter."
Marco's voice came through the speaker, laced with static. "The shooter is dead, boss. Sniper on the outer ridge. But he wasn't trying to hit you or the girl. He dropped a package at the main gate before our men took him down."
Alessandro's brow furrowed. "What package?"
"A physical photograph, fresh from a portable printer," Marco replied grimly. "It's a picture of Clara's restoration shop in Brooklyn... taken fifteen minutes ago. There's a note written on the back."

"Read it," Alessandro ordered.
" 'Bring the child to the piers by midnight, or the shop—and everyone inside your district—burns.' "
