Chapter 5 - The Unspoken Words

Six months later.

Spring had arrived in Westchester County. The grounds of Blackthorne Manor were blanketed in vibrant green grass, blooming white cherry blossoms, and bright yellow daffodils.

The dark clouds that had hung over our lives for a year and a half had officially dissipated into a clear, bright blue sky.

Eleanor Vance had been tried, convicted, and sentenced to two life terms without the possibility of parole at the Bedford Hills Maximum Security Facility. Her corporate assets had been liquidated, and her name had been permanently removed from the Morrison Foundation.

In her place, the board had appointed Annie Reed as the Director of Community Outreach for the Foundation—a role where her genuine empathy, background in social work, and fierce dedication to children flourished.

It was a warm Saturday afternoon.

I stood on the back stone patio, wearing a simple white linen shirt and jeans, holding two glasses of fresh iced tea.

Out on the sprawling green lawn, six-year-old Jordan and Justin were running around with a golden retriever puppy we had adopted two months ago, kicking a soccer ball back and forth across the grass, their loud, joyous laughter ringing through the afternoon air.

Annie sat on the wooden porch bench, wearing a soft yellow sundress, a sketchbook resting in her lap as she drew pictures of the boys playing.

I walked over and handed her one of the glasses of iced tea.

"Thank you, David," she smiled, taking the glass and setting her sketchbook aside.

I sat down beside her on the bench, leaning back against the warm wood, watching my sons.

"They scored ninety-five percent on their pediatric trauma evaluations yesterday," I mentioned softly, a proud smile touching my lips. "Dr. Evans said they're completely cleared. No more night terrors. No more anxiety regressions."

"They're resilient," Annie said gently, resting her head on my shoulder. "Children heal fast when they know they are safe and loved."

"They aren't the only ones who healed, Annie," I murmured, turning my head to look into her soft brown eyes.

I reached into my pocket and pulled out a small, velvet-lined mahogany box.

Annie froze. Her breath caught in her throat as she looked from the box up to my face.

"David..." she whispered, her hands trembling slightly.

I opened the box. Inside sat a simple, stunning platinum ring set with a brilliant round-cut diamond that caught the golden afternoon sunlight.

"Six months ago, you walked into this house with a single suitcase and a gray housekeeping dress," I said, my voice filled with a deep, profound emotion that made my throat tighten. "You found two broken, terrified little boys and a father who was drowning in his own guilt. You didn't just clean my house, Annie. You healed my family. You gave us a future."

I took her hand, sliding the velvet box closer to her.

"I love you, Annie Reed," I whispered, looking straight into her soul. "Not as a nanny. Not as a housekeeper. But as the extraordinary woman who saved my life. Will you do me the honor of becoming my wife, and a mother to my boys?"

Tears of pure, overwhelming joy welled up in Annie’s eyes, spilling softly down her blushing cheeks.

She didn't hesitate for a single second.

"Yes," Annie choked out, throwing her arms around my neck and pressing her soft lips against mine in a deep, passionate kiss that filled my soul with absolute, unshakeable warmth. "Yes, David! A thousand times yes!"

Out on the lawn, the boys stopped kicking the soccer ball.

"DADDY AND MS. ANNIE ARE KISSING!" Justin cheered, waving his arms wildly in the air.

"EWWWW!" Jordan laughed, running toward the porch with the puppy barking happily at his heels. "Does this mean Ms. Annie is staying forever now?!"

Annie pulled back from the kiss, wiping her tears with a laugh as she looked down at the two little boys running up the porch steps.

"Yes, Jordan!" Annie called out, kneeling down with her arms wide open. "It means I'm staying forever!"

The boys tackled her onto the soft wooden porch, smothering her face in hugs, kisses, and giggles, while I sat beside them, my heart fuller than it had ever been in my entire life.
